INDRA & SACHI As per Bhavishya Purana, Indra the King of Devas was advised by Deva Guru Brihaspati to wear a Rakhi as a protection against enemies (Demons) when he was facing defeat at the hands of Vritra Asura. Accordingly, Sachi Devi (consort of Indra) tied a Rakhi to Indra.
NARIYAL POORNIMA Rakhi was intended to be the worship of the sea-god Varuna. Hence, offerings of coconut to Varuna, ceremonial bathing, and fairs at waterfronts accompany this festival. Usually, Koli (fishermen) offer coconut and rakhi to the Sea God Varuna – this festival is known as Nariyal (Coconut) Poornima.
KRISHNA & DRAUPADI In the epic Mahabharat, before going to great war of Mahabharat Draupadi tied rakhi to Krishna wishing him a safety & good luck when he was fighting with Pandavas. And Kunti tied her rakhi to Abhimanyu (Her Grandson). The great war of Mahabharat won by the Pandavas in Mahabharat.

RABINDRANATH TAGORE In 1905, the British empire divided Bengal, a province of British India on the basis of religion. Rabindra Nath Tagore arranged a ceremony to celebrate Raksha Bandhan to strengthen the bond of love and togetherness between Hindus and Muslims of Bengal, and urge them to together protest the British empire. He used the idea of Raksha Bandhan to spread the feeling of brotherhood.
