  2. What is the AVALON Project? • AVALON is an international research project • to advocate virtual language­learning • 26 partners from 10 european countries take part in the project • Free for participants (The costs of the AVALON project are funded by the European Union in 2009/10.)

  3. AVALON – How does it work? • During the project virtual language tuition techniques are tested and adapted to the needs of the participants.As medium the virtual world „Second Life“ is used. In this virtual reality the participants can meet as virtual persons; therefore group tuition is possible. • In order to participate the participants only need a computer with internet-access and a headset. (Broadband Internet is recommended. For specific system requirements see http://secondlife.com/support/sysreqs.php) • The aim of the project is to explore how virtual environments can be useful for language tuition.

  4. What courses are offered at the moment? • Business English Course • 12 classes à 90 minutes

  5. Business English Course • English Level B1 is required • Virtual courses in small groups, instructed by a trainer • Additional virtual meetings or communication by e-mail within the groups • Opportunity to obtain a certificate at the end of the course

  6. Business English Course • During the course role-play is used to impart knowledge. • The themes of the course are adapted to the needs of the small groups.

  7. What`s new with this language course? • Virtual 3D trainings • Easy accessibility of the language course – participation is possible from home. • Free (The costs of the AVALON project are funded by the EU.) • No geographic participation barriers. • No psychological participation barriers.

  8. Profile of Paricipants: • Work returners • Unemployed persons • Seniors • Single Parents • People who want to learn languages from the relaxed environment of their home.
