Mid-South Tornado Patterns, Synoptic Scale Prepared by Anna Wanless Arizona State University
Introduction Ashley, W., 2007 “Spatial and Temporal Analysis of Tornado Fatalities in the United States: 1880-2005”. Retrieved from https://doi.org/10.1175/2007WAF2007004.1
Objectives • Analyze and identify synoptic weather patterns • Hypothesis • There are patterns that are associated with tornadoes • Some of these patterns will be linked to higher number and/or intensity of tornadoes
Methodology • 48 events: • From 1999-2018 • Days with 2+ tornadoes • Split days into 6 hour increments • Analyzed the Surface and Upper air charts • Surface Low Pressure • 850mb: Low-Level Jet • 500mb: Trough • 300mb: Upper-Level Jet
Methodology • Created 9 part grid Flow
2 4
Methodology • Identified which part of each grid had the most events • 17 • No correlation • Linking grids 500mb Trough Upper Level Jet Surface Low Low Level Jet
Low Level Jet White=Surface Low Red=Low Level Jet Purple=Upper Level Jet Blue= Trough
Low Level Jet White=Surface Low Red=Low Level Jet Purple=Upper Level Jet Blue= Trough
Low Level Jet: 0, Surface Low: White=Surface Low Red=Low Level Jet Purple=Upper Level Jet Blue= Trough
Low Level Jet White=Surface Low Red=Low Level Jet Purple=Upper Level Jet Blue= Trough X=1 or 2 events
Methodology • Finding patterns White=Surface Low Red=Low Level Jet Purple=Upper Level Jet Blue= Trough
White=Surface Low Red=Low Level Jet Purple=Upper Level Jet Blue= Trough
Summary • 8 Patterns • No correlation between them and number/intensity of tornadoes • More study needed
