  2. You’ve made a valuable investment in a solar panel system for your home, the last thing you want to do is jeopardize that by not taking care of it. Snow, debris and wild animals pose the biggest threat to solar systems: Snow and your solar panels Provided your solar panels were installed by a professional company, they will have been installed at such an angle that snow slides straight off of them as it melts. Couple this with the glassy surface of the panels, and there is little resistance for melting snow and ice. However, while this is great for your solar panels, it’s not so great for your roof – another investment you really don’t want to jeopardize!

  3. During the winter season (or thanks to global warming, at any time of the year!), it’s not unheard of for snow and ice to melt and fall off the panels in one go, creating a significant weight for whatever it happens to land on. What can you do to protect your roof and other valuable investments from snow damage? Install snow guards Installed between or on the edge of solar panels on a roof, snow guards are designed to trap snow as it falls from solar panels and release it in smaller amounts as it melts. This stops it from presenting such a hazard to anything below the panels. While these aren’t a necessity, if you live in an area of the country prone to heavy, wintry storms, they could prove advantageous.

  4. Wild animals and your solar panels During the winter season, it’s not uncommon to find birds and squirrels making cozy homes for themselves underneath rooftop solar panels, but they can cause damage to the wires. What can you do to protect your solar panels from wild animals?

  5. Install critter guards Often called Squirrel Guards, these mesh systems are installed between the solar panels and the surface of the roof, helping to block the entire area not just from squirrels and other little critters, but from debris, too. It’s important to note that a build up of debris can also become a fire risk if it’s close to the solar systems wiring. Critter guards should always be installed by a professional.

  6. What else can you do to protect your solar panels? It’s always a good idea to trim any trees that are close to the solar panels and your roof, which will deter birds and smaller mammals from climbing onto your roof and making it their home. The less overhanging branches there are, the less the risk of them falling and damaging the panels, or your roof, too. You should also regularly clean your gutters which can provide small animals and birds with the materials they need to build nests close to your solar panels. For more information on how to protect your solar panels from environmental damage, consult with your installer or any other local solar provider.
