Origin • The Gothic movement originated in the buildings and gardens of the English, before progressing to literature. (Connell) • The first Gothic Romanticism novel was The Castle of Otranto in1765 by Horace Walpole. (Brians)
About the Genre • The elements of Gothic Romanticism were bleak and dismal (Butcher) • The mood and themes were dominated by setting (Brians) • Settings generally consisted of ancient castles, dungeons, and graveyards etc. (Connell) • Has elements of mystery, passion and irrationalism (Brians) • The first type of literature to truly illicit great emotion (Butcher)
