  4. What can cause diabetes? • Family history • Overweight • No exercise or activity • Gave birth to big babies (over 9 lbs) • Eat big meals • Large waist size • High blood pressure • High cholesterol Page 3

  5. How can I tell if I have diabetes or high sugar? • Keep regular doctor visits • Thirsty, dry mouth • Urinating many times during night and day • Tired, sleepy Page 4

  6. How can I tell if I have diabetes or high sugar ? • Weight loss • Many infections • Blurred vision • Fasting blood sugar 7 or more Page 5

  7. How can I take care of my diabetes? • Healthy eating/ traditional foods • Exercise • Medicine • Testing my blood sugar regularily Page 6

  9. Exercise Walking is good exercise • Start slow but everyday • Build up to 30 minutes 5 days a week • Walk to the corner store, have fun outdoors with family • Start a walking group, dance, swim, Page 8

  10. Testing my sugar at home • Tells me how food, exercise, and medicine affects my blood sugar • Keeps me in control of my diabetes • I can call my doctor/nurse if sugar goes too high or too low Page 9

  12. Blood sugar targets • 4 – 7 before a meal • Less than 10 2 hours after a meal Page 11

  13. When should I test my sugar ? • At least once a day, before a different meal • Check with your doctor/nurse Page 12

  14. Medicine for diabetes • It is possible that eating well and exercise may not work, you will need help with medicine tablets • It is normal, after many years of diabetes, you will need to take insulin • Taking medicine or insulin, eating healthy food and exercise will keep me in control Page 13

  15. Signs of low sugar reaction • Hungry • Shakes • Sweaty and cold • Pale • Headache • Can’t think straight • Confused • Talking and walking funny Page 14

  16. What to do for low sugar reaction • Check blood sugar, if sugar is below 4 • Take 3 teaspoons of sugar or • ¾ cup fruit juice or soft drink or • 3 dextrose tablets Page 15

  17. What to do for low sugar reaction • Wait 15 minutes, check sugar if below 4 then • Take sugar or juice • Check blood every 15 minutes and treat until you reach 4 • If time to eat your meal, eat a meal • If more than 1 hour till meal take a snack Page 16

  18. How to take care • Carry sugar candy in your pocket • Wear medic alert bracelet • Eat meals on time, don’t skip meals • Take medicine at right time • Test your blood sugar • Tell you doctor if have many reactions Page 17

  20. Keeping Healthy • Eat healthy foods • Exercise • Medicine/insulin • Blood sugar testing everyday • Stop smoking • Check feet everyday • See eye doctor once a year • See family doctor every 3-4 months Page 19
