What do we mean by empowerment? When people are empowered, they have the ABILITY to MAKE CHOICES and change their world. They feel they have control over their lives as they can make decisions about important things in their life! People who are empowered have the authority to make decisions and the power to carry them out.
Authority and Power • people in authority have the right to make decisions that effect us. • people can get authority because people might agree to give it to • them. • others have legal authority. The government of Canada makes laws • that all Canadians must follow. • How did these people get authority?
THE CHARTER • When people have authority it is important that they don't abuse it or • use it in ways that are unfair. • The constitution of Canada ( a set of rules the government must follow) • has a special section called the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. • The Charter makes it illegal for anyone in Canada to use his or her • power unfairly and the Charter applies to EVERYONE. • Some of our rights and freedoms include the right to: • live in any part of Canada they choose. • be protected from discrimination on the basis of race, national or • ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, mental ability or physical • ability. • to be educated in English or French.
WHY IS THE CHARTER IMPORTANT? • This Charter is important because it ensures that we are all treated fairly and it prevents people in power from abusing their power/authority. That is why it is so important!
In Canada, you are considered to be legally an adult when you reach the age of majority(18 or 19 depending on the province}. When you reach this milestone you are considered responsible for your actions. By making responsible decision you will keep the rights and privileges that the law provides.

Children & Disempowerment Children often feel disempowered. It is hard for children to speak up for themselves because adults have authority in almost all situations. In 1990, the Convention of the Rights of the Child was signed. The convention says that the children have: 1) the right to grow up in a welcoming home 2) the right to play 3) the right to get an education. Case Study: The Home Children
