What is plastic surgery? • In 2011, over 15million people had plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons. These costly procedures, instead of being used for medical reasons, are used to enhance and alter people’s appearances. The money the NHS uses for these expensive and irrelevant procedures could instead be spent on cancer research and other life-saving operations. This is why we think that plastic surgery should only be used for medical reasons. • Examples of people who SHOULD be allowed to have plastic surgery include: • People who have major scarring from injuries that are in visible places such as the face, arms and legs. • Burn victims. • People who are born with deformities. • Anyone else with a medical reason for physical deformity. On the following slides, statistics show the most popular types of cosmetic surgery, most of which are unnecessary and the surgeon and money could be used to help people who are more in need.
Most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for women Most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for men Breast augmentation (otherwise known as 'boob jobs') remained the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for women, while liposuction procedures increased by 43% on 2012 Rhinoplasty (otherwise known as a nose job) was the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for men in 2013, while liposuction procedures increased by 28% on 2012
Why? We think that this is important because so many people are suffering because of the vanity of others. Here is an example: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2636227/Terminally-ill-teenager-denied-NHS-funding-operation-relieve-suffering.html Also, cosmetic surgery has many disadvantages:
How and Who? In order to stop plastic surgery for purely cosmetic reasons we would need an official Government ban and fines put in place to reduce the amount of people who are going under the knife for unnecessary reasons. Private practices may also need to be encouraged in order to reduce the amount of plastic surgery patients they have and not allow under 18s to have cosmetic surgery. To achieve this we would need the Government and doctors to agree bans that would stop people from using plastic surgery for aesthetic reasons.
