  1. Chapter 1 Fitness and Wellness for All1.1 Fitness For Life • Physical Fitness- is the ability of your body systems to work together effectively to allow you to be healthy and effectively perform activities of daily living. • A fit person : 1-can perform school work as well as have energy to participate in school sports. • 2-has the ability to respond to normal life situations (ex. raking leaves) • 3-can respond to emergency situations (ex. running to get help) • Most people become less active as they get older. The activities you choose can be those you enjoy most and which are fun for you!!!

  2. Health and Wellness • Health- the state of optimal physical, mental, and social well-being. • Wellness-a state of being that enables you to reach your fullest potential. • Health is no longer only referred to being absent from disease or illness. • Negative component of health is illness (we want to treat and prevent) • Positive component of health is wellness (we want to promote)

  3. Physical Activity and Exercise • Physical Activity- movement using large muscles of the body. • Exercise- physical activity with the purpose of getting fit. • Can be interchangeable but are important to your fitness, health, and wellness. • Activities include: sports, dance, walking, running

  4. Cycle of Physical Activity Benefits • Physical Activity Health and Wellness Physical Fitness • Physical Fitness leads to improved Health and Wellness which then makes you more likely to be Physically Active. • A goal is for you to keep the cycle going throughout your life.

Looking Good / Feeling Good • *Most people care about how they look and are most concerned with weight. • *Regular Physical Activity, proper nutrition, good posture and good body mechanics; can help you look your best. • *The more physically fit you are; the more you can resist fatigue. • *Feeling good = sleeping better, doing better in school, and are less likely to be depressed.

  6. 1.2 Fitness Through Physical Activity • The Parts of Physical Fitness • Being good at sports doesn’t mean your physically fit. • Health –related Physical Fitness- helps you stay healthy • Skill-related Physical Fitness- helps you perform well in sports with certain skills. • Health-related Physical Fitness • Cardiovascular Fitness- exercise your entire body for long periods of time. • Muscular Strength- amount of force your muscles can produce. • Muscular Endurance- use your muscles many times without tiring. • http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6581900n • Flexibility- use your joints fully through a wide range of motion. • Body Mass- percentage of body fat when compared to the rest of the body weight. • *People who are physically fit feel better, look better, and have more energy. • *To be Healthy, is to have a high rating in all parts of Health-related Physical Fitness.

Skill-related Physical Fitness • Agility- change the position of your body quickly • Balance- keep an upright posture while standing • Coordination- using two or more body parts together • Power- use strength quickly • Reaction Time- amount or time it takes to move once you realize the need to act • Speed- cover a distance in a short period of time • *Good health does not come from being good at skill-related fitness but from the activities that improve your health-related fitness.

The Stairway to Lifetime Fitness • *Moving from a level of dependence to a level of independence. • *Allows you to make good decisions about lifetime physical activity. • Step 1: Doing Physical Activity • Step 2: Getting Fit • Step 3: Self-Assessment • Step 4: Self-Planning • Step 5: Lifetime Activity • Step 6: Lifetime Fitness • *The goal of this class is to help you achieve lifetime fitness as a result of healthy lifestyle choices, including lifetime physical activity.
