TheCarnegieCorporationofNewYorkfinancedtheWriting aMeta-AnalysisPaperdetailedinthisarticle,andthe evidenceutilisedtoanswereachquestioncamefromeither genuineorquasi-experiments. Awritingtreatment(e.g.,writingasummaryoftextread)is contrastedtoacontrolcondition(e.g.,readingand rereadingtext)inbothtypesoftrialstoseehowitaffects reading.
METHODSTUDYINCLUSIONAND EXCLUSIONCRITERIA Studieshadtomeetthefollowingsixcriteriatobeincludedinthisreview: Includedatleastonereadingmeasurethatassessedthewriting treatmentorcondition;quasi-experimentalstudieswererequiredto provideasimilarpretestreadingmeasurebecausestudentswerenot randomlyallocatedtoneeds. SEARCHSTRATEGIESUSEDTO LOCATESTUDIES Toidentify260computerisedsearchesinfour databasestofindpotentialstudiesforthisreview:ERIC, PsychINFO,EducationAbstracts,andProQuest (includingDissertationAbstractsInternational). Bothofusreadeachitemfoundinthesesearches (morethanfourteenthousand). Receivedanobjectifitsabstractortitlewaspromising (agreementbetweenuswas99.2%,with disagreementsresolvedbyGraham).
STUDYFEATURECODING Researchcharacteristics,qualitymarkers,and variablesneededtodetermineeffectsizeswereall enteredforeachstudy. Grade,studenttype(e.g.,strugglingwriters,English languagelearners,etc.),numberofparticipants, location,treatmentlength,participanttraining, treatmentdescription,controlconditiondescription, subject,genre,outcomemeasures,publicationtype, andresearchdesignwereamongthestudy descriptors.
STATISTICALANALYSISOF EFFECTSIZES Aweightedrandom-effectsmodelwasusedinour meta-analysis. WederivedanaverageweightedESforeachofthe threestudytopics(weightedtotakeintoaccount samplesizebymultiplyingeachESbyitsinverse variance).
FUTURERESEARCH Thisreviewlooksatandsummarisesthefindingsof pastexperimentalandquasi-experimentalstudies ontheinfluenceofClinicalMeta-AnalysisExperts andwritingtrainingonstudents'readingabilities. Whileasubstantialbodyofstudy(ninety-five investigations)hasdevelopedthroughouttime,the researchfoundationincludesseveralflawsand deficiencies. Onedrawbackisthepoorqualityoftheresearch offered,andthereisanopportunityforimprovement.
CONCLUDINGCOMMENTS Thesoundeffectsofwritingaboutwhatyou'veread,writing training,andmoretimespentwritingareallmentionedinthis review. Whilewritingandwritinginstructionshouldnotbeusedin placeofreadinginstruction,thewritingtreatmentswelook atheregiveteachersmoreoptionstohelpchildrenimprove theirreadingskills.
