City of Ember By: Jaskaran
Reflection #1 In the beginning of the book I wasn’t drawn to reading it because it didn’t have a good introduction. As the book went on it got more interesting such as the fact that the man who was in the room of tunnel 351 was the mayor. When the city was in the first blackout Lina looses poppy in a crowd and Doon is the one who finds her and hands her to Lina. I predicted that Doon would be the one because she was in the area where Doon lived. I also had a feeling that in the room of tunnel 351 it would be the mayor because he was given a message by Lina that was “delivery will be at eight from Looper”. While I read the book it seemed to me that the book was pretty predictable. But at some parts very shocking.
Reflection #2 In the middle of the book it got more interesting because the author added something about instructions and a way to get out of Ember to save the whole city. So this was the part that inspired me to read more and more. In the book there are a lot of plots such as when the mayor causes a riot. When Granny Mayfleet passes away and they have to live with their neighbor Ms. Murdo. Also when they are accused of treason against the mayor and then there are wanted posters of them all around the city. An interesting part from chapter 14 was when they complete the instructions and find the way out of ember. Also during chapters 15-16 she was able to fight the mayor by throwing the chair she was sitting on at the mayor. The way that they planned their escape was very interesting too because. During the third blackout she could see Doon with the candle running to the pipeworks halfway across the city.
Reflection #3 I noticed that Lina and Doon were willing to risk each other’s life for each other if they needed to. I also noticed how in the book how Doon was completely okay with leaving his family in Ember and finding a new home. Lina on the other hand was heartbroken leaving Poppy so she went home to Ms. Murdo and grabbing Poppy and taking Poppy with her. When they got to the surface I was on the edge of my seat to know what would happen next. In the end of the book when Lina and Doon reached the surface they saw this paper under this air sealed glass case. But you could see that the air had gotten to paper and made it rot. It said that “you have successfully escaped Ember and you will be able to start your life over-The Builders”. When they find this message they see the sun come up and birds flying out of trees. The rest is in the next book.
Theme The will to live is one theme of the book. Lina and Doon are caught up in the mystery of the instructions and both are excited about the possibility they might be able to get out of ember. However, they are more concerned with the need to make their world better so they and their families can survive. Lina, along with every other citizen in Ember, has considered the possibility that the generator will go off permanently, leaving the entire city in darkness. Added to that is the realization that supplies aredangerously low. There are few light bulbs and little food remaining in the city's storerooms. Another theme is Family In chapters 16-18 lina is in a middle of a blackout while she is being chased by guards and the given time doon gave to get to the pipeworks. During the blackout she talks about how bad she feels to leave little poppy to mrs.murdo. so in the end of chapter 18 she chooses poppy over leaving the city but she also tries to get to doon before he leaves for freedom.
Making an inference In the end of the book when they are in the rapids and the boat had taken damage, the builders must have tested this and made sure the trip was not that long. When they arrived in still water I suspected that they had hit land and were close to the surface. They had done the exact same thing I had expected. So this is how I made an inference by taking something that had happened way earlier in the book and relating it to this part in the book.
