1: The Round-Up Nazi officers would canvas highly populated cities all over Europe in search of finding members of the “lesser race”
2: Interrogation • Even ID could be tampered with, so people were selected based on looks, last names, & living conditions • Sometimes Germans, themselves were taken!
3: Transportation Captured Jews were loaded on to old, dirty, windowless train cars & cabooses in the night Nazi officers would yell “move back” continuously to fit in as many people as possible Why would the Nazi government want to do this?...
What would the trains be like, you ask? • Approx. 25x10 feet • Maximum capacity was 50 people in a freight X 50 cars = 2,500 on one train • “Holocaust Cars” held 150 people in a freight X 50 cars = 7,500 on one train!!!
4: Arrival After days on these trains, people were unloaded into concentration camps Passengers were unaware of their location No windows & night travel disclosed where camps were
5: Separation Families & friends torn apart by a ruthless selection process + young men, boys, girls - too old, too young, feeble, sick, weak, diseased, disfigured
6: Extermination Camps Those deemed “unfit” were loaded back on to trains to re-visit terrible travel conditions Sent to remotely hidden extermination camps, falsely labeled as “working camps” Masses were gassed & cremated, shot, tortured, or starved
Brain Spill!!! • Graphic & varying Holocaust experiences • Dark, quiet – silence, please • Each will show for a few seconds • As you take in what you see, jot down: • Emotions • Thoughts • Connections • Personal thoughts • Observations • Questions
“Monsters exist, but they are too few in numbers to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are…the functionaries ready to believe and act without asking questions.”
“There's a long road of suffering ahead of you. But don't lose courage. You've already escaped the gravest danger: selection. So now, muster your strength, and don't lose heart. We shall all see the day of liberation. Have faith in life. Above all else, have faith. Drive out despair, and you will keep death away from yourselves. Hell is not for eternity. And now, a prayer - or rather, a piece of advice: let there be comradeship among you. We are all brothers, and we are all suffering the same fate. The same smoke floats over all our heads. Help one another. It is the only way to survive.” ― Elie Wiesel, Night
By the time Allies liberated these camps, Hitler was dead & many Nazis executed their cyanide pactsTo avoid enemy persecution, Nazis who chose to live fled their posts at concentration campsJews, Poles & Gypsies had been left alone for weeks without food, water or order
War Crimes Trials Some Nazi officials who were in charge of these camps were captured nearby or eventually via investigation As the truth of the Holocaust was revealed, the Allies decided to put the Nazi leaders on trial Allies forced Nazi-supporting German citizens to enter camps & clean remains…a psychological trauma to show people what regime they had been supporting
Nuremberg Trials: 1945-1946 – war crimes trials at Nuremberg, Germany • 12 Nazi leaders sentenced to death • Thousands of Nazis imprisoned
