Satellite Gravity Report Offshore SRI LANKAMay, 2003 including interpreted, proprietary seismic and well data provided by CEYPETCO PETROSCAN
NOW AVAILABLE is the 2003 SRI LANKAN Satellite Gravity Report providing MAPPED SEDIMENTARY BASINS including a GEOLOGICAL EVALUATION with interpreted SEISMIC and WELL data with description of Petroleum Prospects
Satellite Gravity Report Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (Ceypetco) and Petroscan are pleased to offer approximately 230,000 sq.km of interpreted satellite derived gravity data off the coasts of Sri Lanka. The Satellite Gravity Report includes diagrams and large scale maps displaying sedimentary basins and basements highs offshore Sri Lanka. The Report also contains a detailed geological evaluation where existing seismic and well data sets have been integrated to yield most interesting prospects
Scope of Work 1) Production of Satellite Gravity Maps, 2) Geological interpretation of the Satellite Gravity Maps using published geoinfo, 3) Incorporation of the geological interpretation with Ceypetco’s existing geophysical data, 4) Assessment of any salient structural and depositional features implied through the interpreted satellite gravity maps, 5) Preparing the Satellite Gravity Report. Evaluation of Petroleum Prospects
What is Satellite Gravity? Satellite Gravity is a tool for the mapping of offshore sedimentary basins and basement topography Petroscan has 18 years of Satellite Gravity experience and owns patents in seven countries, including three patents in the US, for its Satellite Gravity method.
Satellite Altimeter Data Satellite altimeter from three satellites were used: • - GEOSAT (US Navy) - ERS-1 (European Space Agency) - TOPEX/Poseidon (US-France combine) • total length of satellite tracks used were 178,000 km The radar satellites map the ocean topography with a precision (radial accuracy) of 1-2 cm
Altimeter data processing STEP 1: Initial altimeter data processing yields the Marine Geoid. STEP 2: Converting the Marine Geoid to gravity yields Free Air gravity. STEP 3: After compensating for the sea floor topography and associated isostatic influence, the Bouguer Gravity is produced. The Marine Geoid is virtually equivalent with the Mean Sea Surface or the sea surface at complete rest Bathymetric data sources are the World Wide Digital Terrain Data, the US National Geophysical Data Center, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Concept of Interpretation Interpreting Satellite Gravity Maps is based on the following proven concepts: - the high frequency component of the marine geoid reflects excellent correlation with the sea floor topography, - thus, after removal of the bathymetric and related isostatic influence on the marine geoid, the resulting Bouguer Gravity reflects sub-seafloor features including basement topography and areas of sedimentary fill. Bouguer Gravity highs are interpreted as areas of restricted depositional thickness and Bouguer gravity lows indicate areas of maximum deposition (depocentres).
Result Excerpt “As was pointed out in the initial evaluation report, Palk Bay is a most attractive area with high potential for hydrocarbon generation and accumulation. Very large drillable structural prospects in Cretaceous and early Tertiary can be seen on speculative data line #24 (Fig.10) and #SL-82-1105 (Fig.14). These features are bigger in amplitude and aerial extent than the PH-9 oil bearing structure in Indian part of the Bay. This area offers low-risk opportunity for liquid hydrocarbon exploration. Requirement of risk capital is modest.” Several more prospects are presented in the Report
