Wider and Deeper Channels • Gives the river the ability to hold a greater volume of water. • Banks also built up with concrete offering greater protection.
Forests / River Corridoors • Slows water flowing into rivers down steep valleys and slopes. • This helps to reduce the level of flooding.
Overflow Channel Gives the flood water somewhere else to go temporarily.
Task Choose 3 of the following 5 agencies you think may be helpful in a UK flood. Write a sentence for each to explain why you chose these 3. Insurance Companies - Assess damage, check claims and pay out money to people who have insurance policies. Samaritans – An organisation of volunteers who listen to peoples problems. Hire Companies – Hire out specialist equipment to the emergency planners and home-owners. Army and air Force – Provide trained people with specialised equipment eg. lifting equipment, helicopters and boats. The Meteorological Office – Provide weather forecasts and sever weather warnings

Report 3 paragraphs1 defence per paragraph • You need to decide how sustainable flood defences used in Llanwrst are. You need to write a report outlining which defence you think is most sustainable.
Task A new river course has been created which now runs straight through the City centre of Wolverhampton. You have just been told that there will be a major flood event in Wolverhampton within the next couple of weeks and there are no flood defences. You are in charge of the flood defences in the City – what features would you install and where would you put them? What would you want to protect the most? You will be given an unlimited amount of money to protect the City. Review the flood defences used in Llanrwst to give you ideas.
