  4. Be still, my soul: the Lord is at your side;bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;leave to your God to order and provide;in ev'ry change He faithful will remain.Be still, my soul: your best, your heav'nly Friendthro' thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

  5. Be still, my soul: your God will undertaketo guide your future as He has the past.Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;all now mysterious shall be bright at last.Be still, my soul: the tempests still obeyHis voice, who ruled them once on Galilee.

  6. Be still, my soul: the hour is hast'ning onwhen we shall be forever with the Lord, when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgotten, love's pure joy restored.Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

  7. Bible Reading John 14 :1-7 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

  8. The Practicalities of Handling Death in the Modern Church Southwold Lent Lectures 2019

  9. Ministry at the time of death • Ordination of Priests • With all God’s people, priests are to tell the story of God’s love. They are to baptize new disciples in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and to walk with them in the way of Christ, nurturing them in the faith. They are to unfold the Scriptures, to preach the word in season and out of season, and to declare the mighty acts of God. They are to preside at the Lord’s table and lead his people in worship, offering with them a spiritual sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. They are to bless the people in God’s name. They are to resist evil, support the weak, defend the poor, and intercede for all in need. They are to minister to the sick and prepare the dying for their death. Guided by the Spirit, they are to discern and foster the gifts of all God’s people, that the whole Church may be built up in unity and faith.

  10. In the name of God and trusting in his might alone, receive Christ’s healing touch to make you whole. May Christ bring you wholeness of body mind and spirit, deliver you from every evil, and give you his peace. Anointing with olive oil is then used and the words are; I anoint you in the name of God who gives you life. receive Christ’s forgiveness, his healing and his love.

  11. The Last Rites

  12. As you are outwardly anointed with this holy oil, So may our heavenly Father grant you the inward anointing of the Holy Spirit. Of his great mercy May he forgive you your sins And release you from suffering. May he deliver you from all evil, Preserve you in all goodness And bring you to everlasting life; Through Jesus Christ our Lord Amen

  13. Into your hands O merciful Saviour, We commend your servant N Acknowledge, we pray, a sheep of your own fold, A lamb of your own flock, A sinner of your own redeeming. Enfold him/her in the arms of mercy, In the blessed rest of everlasting peace And in the glorious company of the saints in light.

  14. A commendatory Prayer for a sick person at the point of departure. O ALMIGHTY God, with whom do live the spirits of just men made perfect, after they are delivered from their earthly prisons: We humbly commend the soul of this thy servant, our dear brother, into thy hands, as into the hands of a faithful Creator, and most merciful Saviour; most humbly beseeching thee that it may be precious in thy sight. Wash it, we pray thee, in the blood of that immaculate Lamb, that was slain to take away the sins of the world; that whatsoever defilements it may have contracted in the midst of this miserable and naughty world, through the lusts of the flesh or the wiles of Satan, being purged and done away, it may be presented pure and without spot before thee. And teach us who survive, in this and other like daily spectacles of mortality, to see how frail and uncertain our own condition is; and so to number our days, that we may seriously apply our hearts to that holy and heavenly wisdom, whilst we live here, which may in the end bring us to life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, thine only Son our Lord. Amen.

  15. The Roman Catholic Rite Lord Jesus Christ, Saviour of the world, We pray for your servant N, And commend him/her to your mercy. For his/her sake you came down from heaven; Receive him/her now into the joy of your kingdom. For though he/she has sinned, He/she has not denied the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, But has believed in God And has worshipped his/her Creator. Amen

  20. The Roman Catholic service includes this prayer of commendation; Into your hands, Father of mercies, We commend our brother / sister N In the sure and certain hope That, together with all who have died in Christ, He/she will rise with him on the last day.

  21. The Committal • The 1662 version of the English Book of Common Prayer : Then, while the earth shall be cast upon the Body by some standing by, the Priest shall say, • “Forasmuch as it hath pleased Almighty God of his great mercy to take unto himself the soul of our dear brother here departed, we therefore commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ; who shall change our vile body, that it may be like unto his glorious body, according to the mighty working, whereby he is able to subdue all things to himself.”

  25. Caring for the Bereaved

  26. A Place to Remember

  27. Dos and Don’ts of Supporting the Bereaved Do Say you are sorry for the person’s loss Use the name of the deceased when talking about them Offer time to the person – if appropriate arrange a visit Offer practical help – a cup of tea always helps Check how the person is doing some time later Invite them to events/activities as you always did

  28. Don’t Say you know how they feel (you don’t as grief is very individual) Say ‘pull yourself together’ even after several months Avoid the bereaved person (never cross the road because you feel awkward) Stop inviting the bereaved person to events because you don’t want to upset them Assume the bereaved person’s family will help. You might be the key person to offer support.
