  1. The Poisonwood Bible Part 1: Voice

  2. Part 1 Warm up: Please Answer the Following… • What is the significance of Nathan Price’s garden? What does it reveal about Nathan Price? • When reading Orleanna’s introductory chapter to book 1, she says to the reader in the last paragraph, “We aimed for no more than to have dominion over every creature that moved upon the earth…” (10). What does she reveal about their purpose and her feelings behind their purpose? It will be helpful to re-read that last paragraph in its entirety. • The subtitle to Part 1: Genesis is “The Things We Carried.” Leah later says, “We brought all the wrong things” (65). Why does she say this and what should they have brought?

  3. What is Voice? • The voice of a character refers to the personality, behavior, intellect of the character. • Diction determines Voice: word choice • Syntax determines Voice: order or words and phrases • Choices the character makes determine voice • Interactions with other characters and how they handle conflict determine voice • How well a character connects to the reader determines voice (do you like or hate them?)

  4. So lets play around with Voice a bit • I am going to play 2 versions of the same exact song. The words are the same but that’s about it. Each artist singing the song has their own “voice”. What I want you to do is think about adjectives (descriptive words) that describe each voice. Please be specific: good and bad are not strong adjectives. Moody and lighthearted are better adjectives. There is not number that you need, just whatever comes to mind as I play each song. If you know the song/artists, try really hard to focus on the music and how it makes you feel as opposed to who sings it. SOUND ONLY!!

  5. So now what? Part 1 of The Poisonwood Bible introduces us to the Price women (Orleanna, Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth May). They each have a unique voice. Find a quote, IN PART ONE ONLY, that defines their voice as a character. Copy it down on your paper with the page number and character name. If it is a long quote, or a paragraph/specific passage, please use an ellipse to save yourself the agony of copying too much  I’m mean, but not sadistic mean! Also, each woman is narrating their chapter, like a journal, so anything is fair game even if it is not in quotes. After each quote, write 1-2 sentences (at most)that explain why that quote is an example of their voice (This quote shows their voice because…).
