  1. IV. Section 4 Sea-Floor Spreading

  2. A. Mid-Ocean Ridges • Mountain systems that lie like a seam of a baseball , most hidden under water • Sonar- use sound beams to bounce off to map it

  3. B. What is Sea-Floor Spreading? Continually adds new material to the ocean floor The sea floor spreads apart along both sides of a mid-ocean ridge as new crust is added The ocean floor moves like a conveyor belt, carrying the continents along with them Begins at the mid-ocean ridge

  4. C. Evidence for Sea-Floor Spreading • Molten Material- new is erupting along mid- ocean ridge • Magnetic Stripes-Poles have reversed- rock lies in a pattern • Drilling Samples- found that further away from the mid-ocean ridge the older the closer it is newer

  5. D. Subduction at Trenches • Subduction-Ocean floor sinks back into the mantle • Can change the size and shape of the oceans • Pacific Ocean is shrinking • Atlantic Ocean is growing
