#insurance: Some Thoughts on Insurance Coverage and Claims Handling as Posted on LinkedIn Almost five years ago, St. Louis, Missouri, attorney Michael Young's daily feed on the social media website LinkedIn consisted mainly of posts from other people about job openings and inspirational sayings, like 8220reach for the stars.8221 He saw, however, that a number of people from all aspects of the insurance industry had LinkedIn accounts. Because his legal practice focuses on the handling of insurance coverage and bad faith matters, he wondered if he started to contribute posts with his thoughts about the insurance issues that he saw every day in his practice if anyone would respond. The almost immediate response to Mr. Young's posts was incredible. For example, he would post about an insurance company8217s duty to defend a lawsuit or the need of outside counsel to respond in a timely manner, and the post would draw between 1,500 and 15,000 views every day. People commented. Some agreed with him. Some disagreed with him. But the posts did draw real conversations from people in the insurance industry that blew him away. It earned him the nickname, the "LinedIn Legend."He loved it. And he still does.Mr. Young acknowledges that one of the downsides of posting his thoughts on insurance-related issues on LinkedIn is that the posts seemed to have a limited shelf-life. They were like cotton candy, melting away very quickly after consumption and replaced by the next daily posts. Nevertheless, because many people seemed to find his insurance-related posts helpful, even if they disagreed with them, Mr. Young thought it worthwhile to go back in time and
assemble a collection of these posts, his 8220greatest hits,8221 if you will. That8217s what this book (#insurance: Some Thoughts on Insurance Coverage and Claims Handling as Posted on LinkedIn) is.Unlike the random, stream-of- conscious nature of LinkedIn, Mr. Young has grouped his prior posts in #insurance into certain categories, such as Insurance 101, Coverage Analysis and Policy Interpretation, Claims Handling, Insurance Litigation, Life as a Coverage Lawyer, Thoughts on Language and Punctuation, and Just For Fun. While these posts are not claims guidelines or a claims manual or legal advice or the absolute truth on all things insurance, you will find Mr. Young's collection of thoughts on these issues in #insurance helpful (and maybe a little funny), as they are the product of a number of years of working with insurance companies on some pretty challenging, complex cases.
