In what way might the Common Core State Standards be helpful? • They will provide a more valid way to compare the quality of education throughout our nation. • They will provide a more valid way to compare the quality of education in our nation compared to other nation. • They will prepare students for a successful future in a globally competitive market. • All of the above.

  3. 6 Shifts in ELA/Literacy • Read as much non fiction as fiction • Learn about the world by reading • Read more challenging material closely • Discuss reading using evidence • Write non-fiction using evidence • Increase academic vocabulary

  4. How can you help? ■ Discuss career options ■ Help your child investigate careers ■ Help your child find material to read on topics that interest them. ■ Read about their areas of interest/discuss what you read

  5. 6 Shifts in Mathematics • Focus: learn more about fewer, key topics • Build skills within and across grades • Develop speed and accuracy • Really know it, Really do it • Use it in the real world • Think fast AND solve problems
