  2. Overview • Values • set tone in workplace for how work is to be done • guide difficult choices • inconsistency --> confusion, anger • EI Leaders • set values as source of influence, bonding • communicate by word, by deed • consistency

  3. Purpose • Evaluate values that are important to you • Identify value message that you send & receive • Identify incongruencies • Damage to integrity of relationships

  4. Instructions • Complete the worksheet by marking with a different color ink the following: • the 5 values YOU think are most important to the work unit • the 5 values your BOSS thinks are most important to the work unit • the 5 values that CO-WORKERS believe are most important to the work unit • the five values that the COMPANY believes are most important • Examine the sheet for inconsistencies

  6. Debriefing - 1 • Divide yourselves into groups of about 4 members. • Each group should designate a member to play the following roles: • time keeper • note taker • spokesperson • Answer the following questions ...

Debriefing - 2 • Did you discover any inconsistencies in what you, your boss, co-workers, the company values? • Why is it important for leaders to set the values that are most important in their work unit? • What happens when the values that you say you value and the values that the organization values are different? • What impact do inconsistent values have on the work unit? • How can you reinforce the values that you would like to implant in the workplace?

Debriefing - 2 • Did you discover any inconsistencies in what you, your boss, co-workers, the company values? • Why is it important for leaders to set the values that are most important in their work unit? • What happens when the values that you say you value and the values that the organization values are different? • What impact do inconsistent values have on the work unit? • How can you reinforce the values that you would like to implant in the workplace?

Summary • ALL groups have values • those that are most often reinforced will prevail • If the leader doesn’t set the values, someone else will • emergent values may not be the most desirable • Leaders have tremendous power in determining values • But all actions, words and reinforcement must support them
