  2. project aims & evaluation • Raise awareness and interest in steel science and technology amongst university students and their teachers • Training and re-training of graduate employees within the steel industry, its suppliers and customers • Tapping expert knowledge before it disappears • 2 pilot modules 2001/2 • Evaluated by 200+ people in 34 countries worldwide • Academia and industry • Very enthusiastic response – over 90% support the project • IISI to fund 20 new modules 2004-8

  3. steel applications MATERIALS SELECTION • Role-play to simulate the type of job a student can expect in industry • User challenged to reduce mass by 25% • Requires careful balancing of several conflicting requirements

  4. steel processing PROCESS SIMULATION • Fully interactive virtual steelworks will simulate entire production route • Now used in university courses and company training (free online) www.steeluniversity.org
