Lea MarlorBioGraphy Lea Marlor is the Education & Outreach Program Manager for the Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science. Lea works to promote and support the Center's education and diversity programs such as the Transfer-to-Excellence Program. Previously, Lea was a graduate student at Purdue University. While at Purdue she spent two years on the leadership team for Purdue's Women in Engineering Graduate Mentoring Program where she worked to increase the retention of women engineering graduate students. She also participated in events at Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day that focus on educating and exciting female high school students about engineering. Lea holds a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is currently completing an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Purdue University. Lea's graduate research is focused on the nucleation of silicon nanowires.
Transfer-to-Excellence (TTE) is intended to inspire California community college students to ultimately transfer and complete their Bachelor’s degree in science and engineering.
What are the benefits? • Gain an experience to expand upon in your personal statement for your transfer admission application • Experience life as a researcher or student at UC Berkeley • Get to know UC Berkeley faculty, graduate students, and staff • Meet other scientists and engineers • Build long lasting friendships with fellow summer researchers and students • Receive additional advising and support for transfer to a 4-year institution during academic year
TTE Cross-Enrollment (TTE X-Enroll) • 8-week summer course in science, math or engineering at UC Berkeley • Travel expenses provided (e.g., summer BART pass) • $250 book stipend after successful completion of the course • Available to Bay Area community college students
TTE Cross-Enrollment (TTE X-Enroll) • Mentoring from UC Berkeley graduate students & staff • Access to seminars to prepare for a career in science and engineering • TAP advising for transfer to a 4-year institution • Community-building activities with other community college students & summer research interns
Who is eligible for TTE X-Enroll? • Students who have: • A 3.25 GPA for science, engineering and math courses • Completed at least 1 calculus course • Completed at least 2 science or engineering courses • Plans to return to a community college in fall 2014 • Plans to apply to transfer to a 4-year institution in science or engineering in fall 2014 or 2015 • US citizenship or permanent residency *Students who are planning to transfer to a 4-year institution in fall 2014 are ineligible for TTE REU.
Application Dates for TTE X-Enroll • Applications available online TODAY! • Applications due 11:59 PM (PST), January 31st • Decisions made by mid March

TTE Research Experiences for Undergraduates (TTE REU) • 9-week summer research internship at UC Berkeley (June 7 – August 9) • $3,200 stipend, room and meals, travel allowance • Independent research project supervised by UC Berkeley faculty

Who is eligible for TTE REU? • Students who have: • A 3.25 GPA for science, engineering and math courses • Completed two calculus courses • Completed three science or engineering courses, one of which has a laboratory component • Plans to return to a community college in fall 2014 • Plans to apply to transfer to a baccalaureate program in science or engineering in fall 2014 • US citizenship or permanent residency *Students who are planning to transfer to a 4-year institution in fall 2014 are ineligible for TTE REU.

Strategies for Applying • Do your research • Read the application • Write/rewrite your essays • Letters of recommendation • Turn everything in on time • Ask questions when you are unsure of what’s being asked
Do your Research • Go through the website of the center you are interested in • Figure out what interests you the most • Look through previous student projects to get an idea of what interests you the most • Research the faculty and their projects
Read the application • Read everything to figure out what needs to be done on your part • Get an idea of how long it will take you to finish the application
Let’s Practice • Drafting the essays: • Essay #1: Please explain why you wish to conduct summer research and how this relates to your overall interests and goals. • Include the intended 4-year institution major and future career. • Be specific about how you think this research opportunity will benefit you. • Essay #2: Past summer program participants have found the program to be both the most rewarding and yet most challenging experience of their life. Describe a major challenge you have encountered in your life, how you overcame it, and what you learned about yourself and others as a result of the experience. • The experience can be taken from any aspect of your life; it does not need to be related to academics
