  3. ESTIMATING OVERVIEW

  4. Estimating Methods THREE MAIN ESTIMATING METHODS • Manual Estimating • Spreadsheet Estimating • Fully Computerized Estimating

  5. Manual Estimating • Pencil, paper and calculator. • Calculations must be repeated for EACH ESTIMATE. • Changes are DIFFICULT. • Creating reports are very TIME CONSUMING. • Overall manual estimating is SLOW & CUMBERSOME.

  6. Spreadsheet Estimating • e.g. VisiCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, Excel, ……. • results of previous work can be used • calculations are taken care of by the system • some reports can be partially automated, depending on spreadsheet setup

  7. Computerized Estimating • database is permanent & you only need to enter it ONCE • estimates are created in a spreadsheet style with fast calculations, ease of UPDATING & EASY CHANGES • existing estimates can be used as basis for new estimates • reports can be created in many different formats

  8. Precision Estimating • database can be created by the user or can be purchased with periodic updates • PHASES, ITEMS, PRICES, etc. can be added “ON THE FLY” as you create estimates • report options allow tailoring to your / company needs • estimates can be merged, for team efforts

  9. Precision Estimating Extras • interface to other SAGE applications (Precision Bid Analysis, Precision Buyout, Microsoft Project Integrator, ……) • precision tools, which is a collection of utilities that help change, develop, and maintain databases

  10. SAGE Timberline Estimating Extended • SAGE Timberline Estimating Extended Edition • St Clair College • smart assemblies with logic capabilities • crews which allow for labor & equipment requirements • rate tables for different locations

  11. Precision Estimating Overview • Built around 3 concepts • database • spreadsheet • reports

  12. DATABASE • Database contains all cost items, productivity factors, formulas and prices • phase: division of specification • items: labour, material, subcontractors and equipment • addons: profit, insurance, bond, overhead • formula: used to calculate takeoff quantities

  13. DATABASE • Databases can be upgraded at any time. • To create an estimate • you retrieve the database information into the spreadsheet • enter dimension from the working drawings • the software computes takeoff quantities.

  14. Spreadsheet • When you perform a takeoff all selected item information from the database is copied to the spreadsheet and quantities and cost are calculated. • Estimates and the database are completely separate, therefor you can customize the estimates without affecting the database.

  15. Spreadsheet options • Takeoff windows allow retrieval of items for dimension input • Detail windows allow modification to items specific to the estimate • Total window lets you see up to minute cost or change addons • Location codes allow you to organize your estimate

  16. Advantage • Every entry you make is saved to disk immediately, no save or saveas

  17. Menus & Toolbars • precision estimating is “menu driven” • menus are arranged in a hierarchy of menus & submenus. • database menus are separate from the menus you use to build estimate.

  18. Help System Pull Down Menu Help Topics -displays a menu for online help What’s This ? -same as the Help Button Show Me Demos -video of procedures about specific task

  19. Help System Help Button -pick on help button, then pick on area to get information • Whenever in doubt use the help system to answer questions or walk you through procedures.

  20. File tools • this application provides a collection of tools to help maintain the folders / files associated with Timberline • some of the options commonly used are: • Backup • Restore • Copy • Move

  21. External program • Ptwin.exe • Upgrade files • upgrade from older version to current version • Protects files • used to prevent unauthorized access of your database files

  22. Next class • Start working with software • Scan Blackboard notes prior to class
