How do we organise printed material in the Library? (1) • Every subject is represented by a specific number code • Most academic libraries use a subject number code system • Find the number assigned to the book by using the Library catalogue.
How do we organise printed material in the Library? (2) • Local notes for Strathclyde: • Find the number on the shelves, noting if it has D for Dewey section. • All books on same subject are filed at same number, and then alphabetically by 3 letters appearing at end of number • Serials filed by number and then title
Which floor of the Library? Level 1 Computer Science, Information Science, Psychology, Government Publications Level 2 Business, Politics, Economics, Sociology Level 3[Entry point] and Short Loan Level 4 Science, Engineering Level 5 Arts & Humanities, Planning, Architecture, Literature,Language
Borrowing • General lending books - 6 weeks • Lending books with red label - 1 week • Short loan items - 3 hours or overnight • Serials - 1 week (latest issue is reference only) • The Library does not post its printed material overseas
What can I do if the Library does not have the item I need? • Check catalogues of other local libraries (reciprocal agreements) • British Library Inter-Library Loan Service (Library administered) • Vacation access to other UK Universities (SCONUL Agreement) • Libraries of professional / trade associations – use Directory of British Associations
Printed Indexes & Abstracting Services • Identify subject keywords for your subject • Find subject keywords in the index • Refer to numbered paragraph highlighted • Note reference details provided - journal title • Check Library Catalogue for Library holdings of that Journal
Overview of Electronic Services • The Services are available via Library Web Pages: www.lib.strath.ac.uk • Links to other libraries • Links to e-journals Services e.g Ingenta, Elsevier Science Direct • Links to commercial databases • Links to general websites
Library Computer Catalogue • Called Voyager • Available on the Web for off-campus access www.lib.strath.ac.uk Look for the Library catalogues heading • Look for the Voyager icon if you are using a library machine • A useful bibliographic tool
Library Catalogue – Electronic Books • Library subscribes to a selection of electronic business books via Net-Library service • They are all listed on the Library Catalogue • Simple Search option has “electronic books” limit and type “fulltext online” as Keywords anywhere • System will link to Net-Library website – register on site using a campus machine (library staff will help with this if you are permanently off campus) • Many of the books are published by Harvard Business Press
Library Catalogue – combined search option • Select for searching more than one search term • Allows terms to be searched as a phrase • Allows different indexes to be combined
Username and Password Systems for Library Databases • Register with IT Services to obtain Strathclyde email address, network username and password • Complete Library Database Use form – return original signed document to Library • If permanently off-campus, Library staff will establish an ATHENS password for you, and release any other relevant passwords
ABI • Business and management database – information on best practice, theory, company or industry activities • Approximately 900 full-text and 500 abstracted journals • Available off-campus and overseas with an Athens username and password • Printing, downloading or emailing results

ABI – guided search example • The approved subject term “entrepreneurs” has been combined with the subject term “success” • Search results have been restricted to full-text peer-reviewed articles • The date range for the results is 1999 onwards

Business & Industry • Covers companies, industries, products and markets • Focuses on facts, figures, events and markets • 1000 international trade and industry publications providing current business intelligence • Over 70% in full-text
Business & Industry • Available off-campus and overseas with a Business & Industry password • Facility to print, download or email results • Extensive indexing to refine the search: concept terms, industry names, product / SIC codes, marketing terms, geographic region
Business & Industry - indexes • Use the indexes to refine the search • Concept index includes terms such as trends, industry forecasts, market share • Industry index restricts results to a specific industry e.g. alcoholic beverages • Product index restricts to specific product within industry output e.g. sparkling wines
MCB Emerald • Full-text articles on broad range of business topics from 1994 onwards • Some abstracts back to 1989 • Covers journals published by MCB – approximately 120 titles • Requires an Athens password and username • Available off campus
MCB Emerald – advanced search • Choose “Full-text” as Product Selection • Provides a more flexible form of searching • Restrict each search line to a specific field by using the drop down boxes • Tick the truncation box or use a * to search for variations of a word e.g. comput* will find computer, computers, computerisation • Enables a search to be limited by date
Indexed Gateway Services on the Web • Surfing the Web can take a lot of time but not find information of high quality • Use gateway services if possible • Gateway services are usually organised by subject and quality checked by humans • BUBL, Biz/Ed
Sites selected by Subject Librarian • Library web pages list relevant sites selected by the Subject Librarians • Select “Subject Services” on the Home page and choose the relevant topic from the business list • Click on “Internet Resources” for links to useful websites
Discussion lists • Useful for finding expert information • To find a relevant discussion list look at Loughborough University site • www.lboro.ac.uk/library/subj/disclist.html
Email business newsletters • Some web services will deliver regular information to your email address • Some allow you to specify a profile of interests • I subscribe to 2: Freepint and Bnet (www.bnet.co.uk)
Non-traditional Publishers on the Web • Organisations such as business consultants produce reports not easily available via normal retail outlets • Reports may cover marketing, industry trends, management strategy • Look at McKinsey (www.mckinsey.com)
