Surface Area Project By Susan Breen
Summary of Unit • The students will discover how to find the surface area of their house by taking pictures of the rooms, measuring the walls and floors in each room, making their calculations, and presenting their findings to the class. They will be asked to determine how much paint would be needed to paint the rooms as well as how much carpet/tile would be needed for the flooring.
CFQ’s • How is math used in the real world? • What is area? • How is surface area different from lateral area? • What kind of area is needed if one wants to paint the walls in a room? • Find the area of the walls in your house. • Determine how much paint is needed for each wall in each room. • What would be involved if applying two coats of paint?
CFQ’s cont. • Is anything different if your house has crown molding? • Find the area of the floors in your home. • How much flooring (carpet or tile) would be needed in each room?
Unit Vision • The goal is for students to apply what they have learned about area to a real-world setting. Decision making skills are involved in determining what kind of area is needed in order to make their calculations, to do the calculations correctly, to collaborate with others on the processes involved, and to be able to discover for themselves the processes involved along the way.
