A New Way of Thinking… • The IRLA is much more diagnostic than our past leveling systems. • It helps us dig deeper into how the student is reading and discover exactly what skills they need to improve on. • Your child may have some holes in their reading skills that need to be taught before they advance to the next level.

This Year’s Focus • Our goal is to help every student find their Fast, Fun, and Easyreading level. • Students read 30 minutes at school. • Students should also read 20-30 minutes at home every day.
What Students Need at Home to Support Reading Practice • Block out distractions – turn off the tv, radio, computer. • Read with your child or watch him/her read. • Talk to your child about what he/she reads. • Make sure the books come back to school safely.

At-Home Reading Coaching Tips • Have fun • Set a scheduled time for 20-30 minutes of home reading that is non-negotiable • Minimize distractions • Share your love of reading with your child
