What is Adult Onset diabetes (TYPE II)? • “Diabetes is a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both” (CDC, 2011). • In Type ll Diabetes, either the body does not produce adequate amounts of insulin or the cells cannot effectively process the insulin in the body. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. (American Diabetes Association, 2014)

  3. know the symptoms ! • Increased urination • Increased thirst • Increased hunger • Increased fatigue • Poor or delayed wound healing • Frequent infections • Impaired or blurred vision • Tingling or and numbness in the extremities (American Diabetes Association, 2014).

Diabetes management (cdc, 2012) • Hypoglycemics: Insulin and/or oral medications • Monitoring Blood Glucose • Proper Diet (Carbohydrate Controlled/Portion Controlled) • Physical Activity • Monitoring Blood Glucose • Family Support • Support Groups • Management of diabetes-related complications

Diabetes management: diabetes-related complications(cdc, 2012) • Retinopathy: Routine eye exams, dilated eye exam once a year, surgical options • Peripheral Neuropathy: Wear shoes outdoors, use gloves when doing housework, Check water temperature before showering • Dental: Gingivitis (Visit your dentist for regular check ups) • Heart Disease: Lipid panel, monitor BP, EXERCISE!!! • Diabetic Nephropathy : Monitor microalbumin & macroalbumin, dialysis, renal transplant • Foot Care: Daily foot checks for wounds, provider exam quarterly • Immunizations: Get flu shot to prevent complications from illness

  7. Diabetic burden on the u.s.population & economy Diabetes affects 25.8 million people, approximately 8.3% of the U.S. population (CDC, 2011) 18.8 million of the U. S. population is diagnosed with diabetes (CDC, 2011) 7 million of the U.S population is undiagnosed (CDC, 2011) Cost the U.S $174 billion in 2007 (direct and indirect) (CDC, 2010). Direct medical cost of $116 billion in 2007 (CDC, 2010). Indirect cost including disability, work loss, premature mortality, etc. cost the U.S. $58 billion (CDC, 2010).
