  2. CMR Series Mission First and foremost: to increase the number of women bicycle racers. All women begin in Category 4 and without growth in this beginner category, there will be no growth in the higher levels. Break the cycle of too few races, with too few participants. For years promoters had a very difficult time justifying the addition of women’s specific races, much less adding even more specific races for individual categories of women, when the turnout was so low.

  3. Regional Series A season-long Points Series, with Skills Clinics, to encourage beginner and intermediate level women to further develop their cycling skills and to participate in bicycle road racing • Mid Atlantic:Delaware, DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland (1995) • New England: Connecticut, Massachusetts, RhodeIsland, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire (1996) • Northwest: Washington (2000) • Southern:Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina (2000) • Garden State: New Jersey and Pennsylvania (2002) • Northern California:San Francisco Bay Area (2002) • New York: New York State (2004)

  4. The Series Formula • Create a compelling schedule of existing races to make a Series • Start the season with a plan for Skills Clinics • Communicate to every prospective Cat 4 woman you can find • Emphasize the special needs of your area (35+, large geography, lack of coaching) • Ensure Participant Ownership • Keep returning value to the sponsors • Spread the rewards across all participants

  5. The Clinics Formula We believe almost all women struggle to make time to fit fitness into their busy lives, and therefore the successful clinics should • Condense a lot of content into a short amount of time • Combine classroom learning with practical on-the-bike practice • Structure the content to allow people to attend either day or both days • Be taught by instructors who can relate to women’s concerns and issues Because the goal is to support the effort to get women to try bike racing the clinics should • Introduce participants to racing topics • Highlight the details of the Beginner Cat 4 Racing Series to give women an outlet to try racing if they so desire • Include continued free learning opportunities throughout the summer through the free post-race clinics at some races in the Series.

  6. What Has Worked Well • Involving a local Bike Shop • Product Sponsors • Relentless Communication • Regular messages • involve the race announcers • Quality races – qualify for upgrade points; variety • Accuracy of Results • Participation from (and feedback to) the promoters • Deep rewards on points and prizes • Ceremony – leader’s jerseys, press releases, awards ceremonies • Working with local USAC governing organizations • Relying on volunteers

  7. What Has Gotten Easier • Access to Data from USCF • Automated Results from on-line registration services • Finding web skilled volunteers • Email communications • http://mailman.connactivity.com/mailman/listinfo/cyclingmadereal

  8. What Has Not Worked • A workload shouldered by non Cat 3 and non Cat 4 women • Less generous incentives - lowering the participation points - forced upgrades • Less Communication • Fewer Clinics • Excluding Men

  9. The Net Effect • Growth in the Cat 4 women’s fields • In 1st year, NE quadrupled the field sizes • Lots of upgrades to Cat 3 • A Cat 3 series for the Intermediate women • Finally, lots of upgrades to Cat 2 • A Cat 1-2 Series for the Advanced/Pro women
