Developing Mathematical Practices for Number, Operations and Algebraic Reasoning: Grades K -5 Developed by Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova with support from Teachers21 and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
Goals of the Course • Understand and recognize the eight Standards of Mathematical Practices (MP) in the Common Core Standards for Mathematics • Engage deeper into unpacking MP 1, 2 and 7 • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • Reason abstractly • Look for and make use of structure • Recognize the importance of planning a sequence of rich tasks and problems that exemplify the MP on the basis of • Sound pedagogical content knowledge • Rich toolkit of problem solving strategies • Supporting students in their reasoning Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
Goals of the Course Cont. • See coherence in connections within and across grades in developing understanding of key mathematical ideas • Rejuvenate your enthusiasm in solving rich tasks and problems • Discuss issues of mathematics education in the course Blog, reflect, ask questions, present using a document projector camera and MimioTeach interactive white board • Grow in confidence as a mathematics educator! Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
Is this course for Me? • Are you an elementary teacher? • Are you a paraprofessional in elementary school? • Are you a special educator in elementary or middle school? • Are you a math coach, math specialist, curriculum specialist at the elementary level? If you answered “YES” to any of the above, then this course is for you! Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
What will I do in the Course? • Unpack MP and prepare to apply them in your classroom • Discuss written vignettes from students’ discourse on solving problems • Watch and analyze children’s understanding in video clips of clinical interviews with elementary students • Experience contagious problem solving you would love to try with your students Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
What will I do in the Course? (Cont.) • Draw, model, show variety of representations Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
What will I do in the Course? (Cont.) • Learn about types of word problems and create word problems Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
What will I do in the Course? (Cont.) • Analyze student work Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
What will I do in the Course? (Cont.) • Count like a kindergartener – with pizazz! • Use models to decompose and compose numbers to add and subtract with master and flexibility • Play with strategies of whole number computations and the mathematical ideas behind them, for example, walk like an Egyptian (multiply like an Egyptian) Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
What will I do in the Course? (Cont.) • Reveal the secrets of multiplication and division of fractions and do it with gusto! • Get fascinated how third graders can easily solve one and two-step linear equations • Race for Order of Operations, play math games, discover the “math magic” of number tricks Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
What will I do in the Course? (Cont.) • Enjoy working with colleagues; • Benefit from being supported in your reasoning by a facilitator and enrich your toolkit of strategies as a facilitator yourself. Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
What will I do in the Course? (Cont.) • Discover that the math you do and the concepts you discuss actually “make” your dinner table!!! Dr. Jenny K. Tsankova
