    1. U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service Serving the Community in Okinawa

    2. Welcome to Okinawa! As the Department of the Navy’s primary Law Enforcement and Counterintelligence agency, we welcome you to Okinawa, and hope that you have a successful and enjoyable tour of duty here. NCIS has a large agency presence on Okinawa and a strong working relationship with other military criminal investigative agencies on Island and the numerous Okinawa Law Enforcement agencies. In addition to felony criminal investigations, our office provides significant support to Marine Corps and Navy Commands on issues such as Force Protection, Counterintelligence, and operational issues. We also meet with Parent groups and participate in Town Meetings as a Crime Prevention service to our community, and are available with a telephone call.

    3. Some Tips for Transition As representatives of our Nation and our Services, we are all expected to obey the laws of the U.S., comply with military rules and regulations, and adhere to our core values. We’d like to provide you with some tips and info which should assist you in completing a successful tour of duty.

    4. Illegal Drugs “Drugs” illegal in the U.S. are illegal in Japan. While there may be a temptation to experiment, it’s not worth the loss of your career, or the risk of either Japanese or American prison. While some substances may not be illegal on the local economy, they are illegal for us. NCIS is an active participant in the Japan/U.S. counter-narcotics effort, and Japanese authorities often maintain prosecutorial jurisdiction in drug offenses.

    5. Alcohol Alcohol often plays a significant role in bad decisions individuals make which result in NCIS felony investigations. If you choose to drink, on or off-base, be responsible. Don’t let alcohol become a problem. If you see a situation getting out of hand with a service or family member… Walk the talk, Be your brother’s keeper.

    6. “Let Freedom Ring” See something you think is suspicious? Let us know and we’ll respond, and get the information to all who need to know.     7. Smuggling Illegal import or export of goods, etc. is a violation of both U.S. and Japanese Customs laws and regulations. If you have a question, call the Customs Office at PMO (645-2217).

    8. Child Pornography It is a felony offense to possess even ONE image depicting the sexual exploitation of a child under the age of 18.

    9. Domestic Violence Unit A cooperative effort of Law Enforcement, Counseling, and Medical personnel – on Okinawa – focusing on prevention and early intervention in Domestic Abuse cases.

    10. Safekids Program A Crime Prevention initiative implemented in cooperation with the DoDDS Schools on Okinawa. This program focuses on 4th through 9th graders, and provides information on computer privacy, Internet safety, and other related information. An adult version of Safekids is also available.
