  1. Basics & Ports Your Computer only understand two things: 0 and 1 Everything inside the PC is 0 and 1 You type character “A” on the keyboard…Before it shows up on the monitor, it is converted to BINARY Expression: 01100011010010 First four #’s tell the computer the group: 0110 (Character Group) Second group of numbers: 0011010010 (Character A)…This group tells the processor what character it is. 4 Functions of the PC: Input Processing Output Storage

  2. Binary Numbers Remember these are the only numbers that your computer understands! Simple way to understand Binary: Binary Decimal 0 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 == 99 We read these numbers from right to left. Each Binary number (Base2)represents a switch (128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1) = 8 bits 0 1 1 0 0 0 1 1 * * * * * * * * 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 0 + 64 +32+ 0+0+0+2+1 = 99 Calculate: 1010 = ??

  3. ESD Electro Static Discharge (The Passing of Static Electrical Charge) It happens when two objects with different amounts of static electricity come into contact with one another It occurs more often in Dry, Cool environments Example: Ways to Avoid: Antistatic Wrist Strap Antistatic Mat Antistatic Bag Workaround if you don’t have above three: Touch the power supply frequently Always unplug the PC before working on it Easy way to remember ESD ESD == B.A.D. Guaranteed to be on the EXAM
