The Industry Engagement Workshop • Request from Y2 Review • Run in Cambridge 18.11.2010 • Attendee list ~100 available on request http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/research/srg/netos/socialnets
Featured Industry Speakers • Balanchander Krishnamurthy, AT&T • Sharad Goel, Yahoo • Richard Allen, Facebook • Jurgen Van Gael, Microsoft FUSE labs • Christos Gkantsidis, MSR Cambridge • Also invited Google (visa problem prevented attendance, although slides delivered)
Outcomes from Workshop • Consumer behaviour may or may not be influenced by Social nets • Real time web is emerging space where mobile social nets can be exploited • Criteria and rationale for emergence of social communities is not currently well understood • Role of social net is at early stage of exploitation • Early adoption of social nets is continuing and may be future dominant tech in developing world
Further outcomes • Geo-spatial loc and social nets are going to combine and emerge as new service space • Privacy leakage is happening too much
Final Request • Many authors are publishing in Transactions on Mobile Computing • But there is not any single top-level conference under ACM or Equiv. • Work is diffused through WWW, Mobi* and Sigcomm • Do we want a top level conference where industry and academia can pub&meet?
