  2. Ernest Rutherford Ernest Rutherford was a New Zealand born Physicist and Chemist Born in 1781 and died in 1867

  3. His First Contribution to Science His first Contribution to science was in 1907 where him and his partner, Thomas Royds proved that Alpha radiation was helium ions, but would not perform his most famous work until later

  4. His Greatest Contribution to Science(“Splitting the atom”) After becoming a Nobel laureate, he theorized that Atoms have their charge concentrated in a very small nucleus and made a model of the atom he called his”Rutherford Model” after using information from his experiment And was the first person to split the atom in 1917.

  5. His Tragic Demise Rutherford went on to live 20 more years after his experiment in which he succeeded in splitting the atom, But tragedy was about to strike. He had gotten a Hernia which had became a bit strangulated, causing him to become incredibly ill due to him not wanting help on the matter. He died 4 days after he had received an emergency surgery. The cause of death was Intestinal Paralysis

  6. Fun Facts • An element called”Ruthorfordium” was named after him in honor of his memory • He was knighted in 1914 • He has had numerous awards and buildings named after him in europe and england • He was entombed near Issac Newton
