Mark Twain Born November 30, 1835 as Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, a port town on the Mississippi River, where he also started working as a steamboat pilot later in his years. This is where he also got his famous penname “Mark Twain” which was a term used by the workers at Mississippi river meaning “Mark number two”. Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn got published in England 1884 and later in The United States 1885. The book was criticized because of its use of racial stereotypes, its coarse language and because of its use of the racial slur “nigger”. Mark Twain and Haley’s Comet The year when Samuel Clemens was born, 1835, the famous Haley’s Comet passed over. Mark Twain said that he would not die until he saw the comet again.
