  3. Listening In this part of the play, King Lear asks the Duke of Burgundy and the King of France whether they still want to marry Cordelia. What do you think the two men will say? Can you make some predictions?

  4. Listen and try to catch these ideas: King Lear tells them that Cordelia is no longer going to have part of his kingdom and She will be a poor woman when she marries. the Duke of Burgundy (DB)’s response: he cannot marry her after all.

  5. the King of France (KF)’s response: he decides to marry Cordelia even without her part of the kingdom. Who will Cordelia marry? The King of France.

  6. Listen again carefully and then answer the questions: 1. What does King Lear tell the two men? 2. How does the Duke of Burgundy respond when he hears the news?

  7. 3. What does the King of France want to know when he first hears the news? What does Cordelia tell him? 4. What does the King of France decide to do?

  8. Answers 1 Lear tells them that Cordelia is no longer going to have part of his kingdom. She will be a poor woman when she marries. 2.Burgundy says he cannot marry her after all.

  9. 3 The king of France asks Lear what Cordelia has done to turn him against her. Cordelia explains she has done nothing bad, just hasn't found the words to tell her father how much she loves him.

  10. 4. The king of France decides to marry Cordelia even without her part of the kingdom.

  11. Questions left for you to discuss: 1 What do you think of the Duke of Burgundy's decision? 2 What is your opinion of the King of France?

  12. 3 How do Goneril and Regan act towards their sister after the king has left? What does this tell you about the character of the two elder sisters? 4 What do you think will happen next?

  13. 3 The two sisters are rude to their younger sister. They refuse to take Cordelia's advice and ask her to mind her own business. All these give a hint of their rudeness and cruelty.

  14. 4. According to what they said, probably they will do something bad to their father --- King Lear.

  16. Duke of Burgundy enter. Both these gentlemen want to marry Cordelia. L: Ah, come here Burgundy. I have something to tell you. I no longer care for my daughter and she is to leave my castle a poor woman. She

  17. will have none of my riches when she marries you. B: That was not our agreement, sir. L: Well, it is now. B: I am sorry but I cannot marry her under these circumstances.

  18. L: Fine, then don’t. And you, France. Are you willing to marry this daughter whom I hate? F: I don’t understand. Yesterday Cordelia was your favorite. She was the child of your old age, the

  19. best, the dearest of your daughters. She must have done something most terrible to turn you against her. C: Your Majesty. I have committed no murder or any other dishonorable act. It is simply that I could not find

  20. the words to tell my father how much I love him. L: It would have been better if you had never been born than you had displeased me so much. F: Is this her only fault? Why, then I shall marry her and take her to

  21. France where she will be my queen. L: Take her, for she is no daughter of mine.come Burgundy. I do not want to look any longer at her face.

  22. N: The King and Burgundy leave together with the Dukes o Albany and Cornwall. C: Sisters, goodbye. I pray that your grand speeches have some truth in

  23. them and that you will be kind to my father. R: Don’t tell us what to do. G: Yes, mind your own business and look after your husband. N: Cordelia and the King of France leave.

  24. G: Sister, our father is much changed. He always loved Cordelia best yet see how quickly he threw her out. R: Yes, I think he is becoming unwise in his old age.

  25. G: Well, he was always quick-tempered but now he is becoming far worse. I think we had better find some way of making sure he can’t cause us any problems. R: Yes, Let’s think about it. N: Regan and Goneril leave.

  27. 1 Who do you think the man with the sword is? Kent disguised as Caius. 2 Why do you think he has been placed in the stocks? For hitting the other man (Regan's servant) with a sword.

  28. 3 What do you think King Lear is saying to his daughter and her husband?

  29. Listen to the tape with these questions and try to answer them:

  30. 1 Why was the Duke of Kent put into the stocks? He had an argument with Regan's servant, and hit him with the flat side of his sword.

  31. 2 What happens when Lear asks to see his daughter? Regan at first pretends she is too tired to see Lear.

  32. 3 What does Regan tell the king to do? When Goneril arrives what do the sisters tell King Lear to do? What happens to King Lear next? Regan tells Lear he should return to Goneril and apologize.

  33. Goneril and Regan tell Lear that he is selfish and that he should dismiss all his soldiers except for a few old men. Lear becomes angry and says he will not live with either of his daughters. Then he rushes away from the castle into an approaching storm.

  34. Listen again and cross out the ones that didn't happen and number the others in order. ( ) A Kent gets into an argument with Oswald and is put in the stocks. ( ) B At first Regan and her husband refuse to see Lear. 2 4

  35. ( ) C Lear runs out into the storm. ( ) D Kent demands that Regan apologize to him for putting him in the stocks. ( ) E Kent goes to Regan's castle to tell her Lear is coming. 7 1

  36. ( ) F Goneril arrives at the castle and she and Regan tell their father he's a silly old man. ( ) G When Lear arrives and finds Kent in the stocks he is very angry. 6 3

  37. ( ) H When she finally comes to see Lear, Regan tells Lear to return to Goneril and apologize. ( ) I Kent tells the king he is Kent disguised as Caius, his servant. 5

  38. 3 Listen again and answer these questions: 1 How does King Lear feel when he finds Kent / Caius in the stocks? He is angry and sees the punishment of his personal servant as an insult to himself.

  39. 2 Why do you think being put in the stocks is a terrible punishment? Being put in stocks and left on public display would be shameful. Passersby could laugh, call out insults or even throw things like rotten food at him.

  40. 3 What does Regan say that shows the audience she has no sympathy for Lear? She says that Goneril is not that bad and then she suggests Lear return to Goneril and apologize to her.

  41. 4 Why do you think it is so important for King ? Lear to keep his troop of one hundred soldiers? The hundred soldiers act as an "bonour guard" to show that be is still an important person. Without his troop he would be just an ordinary person of no importance.

  42. LISTENING TEXT KING LEAR Part 4 (N=Narrator L=Lear K=Kent KN=KnightR=Regan)

  43. N: The Duke of Kent, disguised as Lear's servant, Caius, travels to Regan's castle before King Lear to tell his second daughter that he will soon be arriving. Unfortunately, Kent meets Regan's servant outside the gates of the castle. They argue and Kent beats him with the fiat side of his sword.

  44. Regan's husband, the Duke of Cornwall punishes Kent by.placing him in the stocks. When Lear arrives, he finds Kent in the stocks, outside the castle gates. Lear enters with one of his knights.

  45. L: I wonder why my servant Caius didn't return after he delivered my message to Regan? KN: I don't know. We should have met up with him by now. K: Welcome, Your Majesty. L: Caius? Are you playing a joke on me?

  46. K: No, my Lord. L: Then what man has done this to you? K: Man and woman, my Lord. It was your daughter and son-in-law who had me put in these stocks. L: No, no, they wouldn't dare do such a thing! K: Yes, my Lord.

  47. L: Never! K: I swear it's true. L: This is terrible! They cannot do this to my personal servantl Where's this daughter? K: Within the castle with her husband.

  48. N: At first Regan and her husband refuse to speak to Lear. They say they have been travelling all night and are too tired. However, when King Lear tells their servant that he will go into their bedroom to talk to them, Regan and Cornwall come to the entrance of the castle. Regan and Cornwall enter with some soldiers.

  49. R: It's good to seeyou, Your Majesty. L: Oh, Regan, you won't believe how unkind your sister is. I can hardly talk about it. R: I'm sure she's notas bad as all that. L: She's a monster.

  50. R: Father, I really think you should return to Goneril and apologize. L: Never! She told me to get rid of half my troops. She's an unnatural daughter. Let her go to hell!
