How do germs find us? Everybody knows that germs can make people sick. But what are germs? Where can you find them? Who can name a kind of germ? What can germs do to your body? Why do you think that germs are bad for you? What can you do to keep yourself safe from germs? Name some things that you can do to protect yourself.
Different types of Germs • Virus • Viruses are a type of germ. They're very tiny, and when they get inside your body, they can make you sick. Viruses cause colds chicken pox, measles, flu, and many other diseases. Unfortunately, antibiotics don't work on viruses like they do on bacteria. Wash your hands often to help prevent the spread of viruses, especially before you eat and after you use the bathroom.
Germs (continued) • Bacteria (Food Poisoning, Strep Throat) • If you're feeling crummy, it's probably because nasty bacteria or some other germs have gotten into your body and made you sick. Bacteria are so tiny that you can't see them with just your eyes, but there are thousands, millions, even billions of them all over you, inside and out! This might sound kind of gross, but lots of bacteria actually help our bodies. The good bacteria are good for us, and the bad bacteria can make us sick. They may be to blame for your next sore throat or ear infection.
How to wash hands! • Use warm water (not cold or hot) when you wash your hands. • Use whatever soap you like. Some soaps come in cool shapes and colors or smell nice, but whatever kind gets you scrubbing is the kind you should use. Antibacterial soaps are OK to use, but regular soap works fine. • Work up some lather on both sides of your hands, your wrists, and between your fingers. Don't forget to wash around your nails. This is one place germs like to hide. Wash for about 10 to 15 seconds — about how long it takes to sing "Happy Birthday." (Sing it quickly two times or just once if you go nice and slow.) • Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.
Did you wash your hands? • So when are the best times to wash your hands? • when your hands are dirty • before eating or touching food (like if you're helping cook or bake, for example) • after using the bathroom • after blowing your nose or coughing • after touching pets or other animals • after playing outside • before and after visiting a sick relative or friend
How to prevent catching Germs • Washing hands correctly • Cover you mouth when you cough or sneeze • Don’t touch or rub your eyes • Don’t share your drinks with friends • Take the appropriate amount of time to go to the bathroom, always wash your hands!!!!
