Who were the pirates? Pirates have existed since ancient times. They threatened the trading routes of ancient Greece, and captured ships from Roman. Pirates were sometimes known as corsairs or buccaneers. Corsairs were pirates who operated in the Mediterranean Sea between the 15th and 18th centuries. Corsairs had bases along the Barbary coast of north Africa. They built many strong fortresses to defend the Barbary ports of Algiers, Tripoli and Tunis. In the 17th century, buccaneers lived on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and Tortuga. At first, they lived as hunters, and shot wild pigs with their muskets. Their name came from the special wooden huts called boucans where they smoked their meat.
The history of Talk Like a Pirate Day International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday invented in 1995 by John Baur ("Ol' Chumbucket") and Mark Summers ("Cap'n Slappy"), who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. For example, an observer of this holiday would greet friends not with "Hello", but with "Ahoy, me hearty!" The date was selected because it was the birthday of Summers's ex-wife and consequently would be easy for him to remember.

Davy Jones' Locker: the bottom of the sea, where the souls of dead men lie
Grog: A pirate's favorite drink. • Jolly Roger: the skull and crossbones, the pirate flag! • Matey: A shipmate or a friend. • Scallywag: A bad person. A scoundrel. • Shiver me timbers!: an exclamation of surprise, to be shouted most loud. • Sweet trade: the career of piracy • Yo-ho-ho: Pirate laughter
Pirate’s lovely song It's great to be a pirateAnd live a life of pleasureWe fight with swords and swing from ropesAnd hunt for buried treasure. We make our prisoners walk the plankSharks love us when we feed `em.We wear those patches on our eyesWhen we don't even need `em.CHORUSIt's great, it's great - It's great to be a pirate! It's great, it's great - It's swell to be bum. It's great, it's great - It's great to be a blackguard. It's great, it's great - Its so delicious to be viciousThrilling to be scum. It's great to conquer ships at seaAnd steal what isn't oursAnd smell like stinky sneakers`Cause we never bathe or shower. It's great to get shot at all the timeAnd lose an arm or leg.And every morning get to chooseA stylish hook or peg
