My photo analysis Ellen Coyle AS Media
For this image, I tried to match her bracelet and lip colour together and her jacket and the background as best as possible. I didn’t want her to look very smiley, so I photographed a half smile. As my magazine is an indie/alternative magazine, I gave her an outfit as well as make up and hair, to match the type of magazine I want. I prefer doing mid shot because it gets all her prominent features in the picture (eyes and hair) I think that’s the sort of image I want to put on the from of my magazine.
For this image I asked her to pose more edgy and act more serious. I messed up her hair more than the previous photo because I wanted her to have a messy/alternative look to her to correspond to my magazine. I also gave her a brighter lipstick and made it red to match the opposite colour of the ring (green) because they are alternative colours, again linking with my magazine. Again I used a mid shot photo and tried to focus on the hood framing her face and all the colours matching, as well as the brightness of her hair colour- it makes her eyes look bluer. I think that mid shots suit her figure because they emphasize all her iconic features e.g. hair and eyes.
Again I wanted her to be quite serious, but I tried to do a photo of her sitting down. Also the tattoo (temporary) on her hand is more obvious now, I wanted to match her outfit as much as possible without making it obvious. However I did want to have more sophistication in this photo, to link with how my audience likes their magazine to look, so I had her hair all on one side and added the hat again to make it more edgy. However this photo is not my favourite
As most of my photos were mid shots and close ups, I tried to take a long shot photo. I matched the green stripes on her skirt to her lipstick and the ring she is wearing, as well as her jacket again to the background. However I did not want to make it to matchy-matchy so I differed the colours shades, again to go with the different/indie music magazine style. I wanted her to just be natural, so I asked her to just run her hands through her hair. I would most likely use this image on my double page spread.
For this photo, I wanted her to act natural again, so I asked her to laugh and look happy. I also wanted to make it look sophisticated again, so I kept the hat and swept the hair all to one side. I also wanted to make her hair more obvious as it is probably the first thing noticeable which again why I swept it all to one side. However, this is another mid shot, which is probably why I am not totally fond of it. I still like the photo and will most likely use it, possibly on my contents page.
I tried to take another long shot but wanted to make it a little different, so I asked my model to sit down rather than having her stand up like in all my other photos. I went for a wild sort of look to match the jacket, so I made her hair as messy and wild as possible and gave her “cat eye” make-up to again be for wild like. I tried to keep the colours quite simple(clothing wise) so I went for black and white mostly, however to give my model a bit more glam, I asked her to wear a pair of high heeled wedges that were glittery on the sides and made her wear the big fur coat.
For this photo, I did a mid shot because I thought it was important to get all the extravagant parts of the costume for example the dress and the jacket. Again, I tried to match all the colours together, so I match the jacket, hat, dress and tights all together just because black is probably the easiest colour to match. I made her hair all messy again to make her looks more wild, because I wanted her to look a little less casual than the previous photos. I asked her to look serious as well because I think indie/alternative magazines are more serious than pop magazines, so I wanted to keep in that theme.
This is another long shot that i’ve taken because I think I focus to much on mid shots. I wanted to exaggerate the shoes as well because of wanting her to look more glam, so I asked her to lift her foot up and do a more fashiony pose. I wanted to have her smiling in this one as well because most of my previous photos have been very serious, so I wanted to have more variety in my photos and had her being more fun, happy and smiley. I added a bit more glamour by giving her the fur coat to wear and messing up her hair, again to give her the wild look.
Again, I wanted to have more variety among my photos so I made this a close up. I asked my model to look serious, to keep with the theme of a sophisticated magazine. I matched all her clothing together again, because I wanted to make her long hair more obvious and added the hat to make her look a little more different than many bands and music artists on magazine front covers. I also added the leather jacket to give her more of an edgy look and asked her to crouch down just to vary the poses I asked her to do.
I asked her to crouch again, just to keep her poses varied but it also allowed me to take a long shot more easily and I was able to get the shoes in which made her look more glamorous because of the glitter. I asked her to keep serious again because I think it’s important to remember the type of music magazine which is why I kept her serious because of the indie/alternative magazine that my audience wants to see. I kept the colour scheme the same again because it makes her gorgeous orange hair stand out against the black colour of the leather jacket and the dress.
I had her sit down in this was as well to keep the varied photos going. I also wanted the photo to look as if she was a bit more dominant which is why I asked her to put both of her arms on the arm rests, so it looks as if she’s sitting on a throne. I made her hair messy again, to match the type of jacket she’s wearing (animal print) and asked her to remain serious again because of the reasons I have expressed in my previous evaluations. However, I think this time she looks more happy serious rather than angry serious which I don’t think works as well (happy serious).
I think that I will definitely use a mid shot for the image on my front cover because all her features seem to be emphasized by the use of a mid shot I will have her quite serious and straight on rather than bending because it fits with the more sophisticated layout of my magazine cover. I will have her hair on both sides of her shoulder because it makes her look more iconic and her hair is the first thing that someone will notice because of the brightness. For my DPS, I will use a long shot because there is more space to put an image on that page and I will have her being less serious because I want to have to sides to her because it makes the model more interesting EVALUATION
