Welcome!!! 1 April 2013
While you listen…. • Does this literature remind you of experiences you have had? • How are insects part of your life?
Welcome the mealworms…! • Care of living things—taking care of our mealworms… • Journal • Magnifiers • Paper
Observe & draw a diagram • Draw an outline • Look for EVERY detail, every feature • Label the diagram • How do they move? • Write down the questions that come up as you observe…
Is the mealworm really a worm? • Why do we say mealworms are insects? • What did you notice about how the mealworms move? (volunteers?!?) • How do you think mealworms find food?
How do mealworms find food? • Make a small pile of bran • Place the mealworm at the other end of the paper • Trace the mealworm’s path • How would you answer the question now?
Now it is your turn…. • Design a simple test to learn more about mealworm behavior • POSSIBLE fair tests: Do meal worms prefer: • Dark or light? • Wet or dry? • A certain color? • Smooth or rough surface? • …….come up with your own idea!
Creating fair tests with animals… • MUST give choice if the animal is to show a preference; • Describe/ diagram what animal does as completely as possible • Control conditions as much as possible • To know if behavior is different you have to know what is typical behavior • Do the same experiment many times
Misc info about animal behaviors… Animals will Academic term/ clarification Orthokinesis: (ortho- straight; -kinesis- movement) Klinokinesis: (klino- to lean; -kinesis movement) Respond to the sum of all stimuli Show preferences only • move faster and more directly through an unfavorable place; • Turn or move in response to a stimulus; • Respond to everything in its environment • Do not generalize from your conclusions (do NOT say “all mealworms….” but “this meal worm showed a preference for…”
FINAL REMINDERS April 29 @ Humbolt • Your BIM unit is due • Plans with any changes noted • Assessment results • Reflection on student learning and BIM experience
