  2. What is Social Work? • Working with the most vulnerable & disadvantaged • Children & families, adults, groups & communities • To enable people to function & participate in society

  3. What is Social Workers do? • Key assessments & decisions effecting people’s rights, safety & protection • Therapeutic & preventative work Statutory Duties & collaborative work

  4. Admission and Application • Minimum 240 UCAS tariff points • Access or equivalent • Maths & English ‘C’ GSCE or equivalent key skills • Relevant work experience in health or social care working directly with service users

  5. Admission Criteria • Apply by January via UCAS • Meet entry requirements • Invite for Interview & written test • Conditional Offer • Police & Health Check

  6. Admission Criteria • Interviews start in January • Member of Staff & Practitioner • Course Starts third week in September

  7. Course Structure • Year One – Mon – Wednesday teaching from January Placement (30 days) – Thurs & Fri. • Year Two – 2 days teaching from November Placement (80 days) -Mon, Tues, & Wednesdays • Year three – One day teaching – from Nov. Placement (90 days), Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs.

Structure • Year One – foundation year – core module • Underpinning the knowledge required, eg • Social Policy, Law, Contemporary Social Work Practice, Human Growth & Dev. • Social & Cultural Diversity & Empowerment, Study Skills • Year Two – skills based modules, eg counselling, group work, or working with children

  9. Structure con’td • SW in the Community, Practice Research, Law & SCD&E • Year 3 – ‘client-based’ modules, SW Theory, Values & Ethics, Dissertation • Reflective Journal runs throughout the degree – integrating theory & practice

  10. Aim of the Programme • To develop clear links between theory & practice • To enable students to prepare & reflect on their practice • Register with GSCC as professionally qualified social workers

  11. Where do Social Worker Work • Employed by range of statutory & voluntary organisations, working in collaboration with health, housing, education & criminal justice provision

  12. Employment • Employed by health & local authorities – starting salary £18k + (see Community Care Magazine online ) • In the Voluntary & Independent sector • Relocation Packages often available • Overseas Opportunities
