  3. Important Dates • October 16th—College Application Day • December 1st—Clemson, CofC and USC application deadlines • January 1st—FAFSA opens! • Feb 6 - On-site Job Shadowing • Feb 28 – Job Fair

  4. Important Dates • June 4 @ 7:30 pm—Mandatory Graduation Practice • June 6 @ 7:30 pm—GRADUATION!!! Woo Hoo!!!!

Requirements for Graduation • English 4 Units • Mathematics 4 Units • Science 2 Units • Physical Science 1 Unit • Social Studies 1 Unit • US History 1 Unit • US Government .5 Unit • Economics .5 Unit • Foreign Language OR • Career & Technology 1 Unit • PE 1 Unit • Computer Technology 1 Unit • Electives 7 Units • A score of at least 200 on the ELA and Math portions of the HSAP

  7. Requirements for 4 Year Colleges • High School Diploma Requirements AND • At least 2 years of the same foreign language • 3 Lab sciences (does not include Physical Science) • 1 Fine art • 1 College prep elective

Attendance • Seniors are responsible for keeping up with their attendance! • Cannot exceed 5 absences for semester class • Cannot exceed 3 absences for quarter class • Don’t rely on seat time recovery • May have up to 2 college visit days (different schools) • Bring note from college into attendance after visit

  9. SAT vs ACT

The SAT • www.collegeboard.org • Tests students on reasoning ability • Includes Critical Reading, Math, and Writing sections • Writing portion is not optional • Students are penalized for wrong answers • ¼ point taken off • Only guess if you can’t eliminate any answers • Based on 2400 points-800 in each area • Many colleges only use CR & Math

  11. The ACT • www.actstudent.org • Achievement style test (similar to PACT) • Students are not penalized for wrong answers • Guessing is ok • Based on 36 points • Cumulative score includes English, Math, Science and Reading • Writing portion optional, does not figure into composite

  12. SAT & ACT • Not needed to attend Greenville Tech • We recommend taking both tests once and repeating your top test • We will not be sending ACT or SAT scores with college applications. Be sure to have scores sent via College Board or ACT

  13. Fee Waivers • If you qualify for free or reduced lunch, you are eligible for 2 fee waivers for both the ACT and the SAT • Fee waivers for college applications are also available from participating colleges if you qualify • See your counselor for the fee waiver forms

  14. The NCAA Clearinghouse • www.eligibilitycenter.org • Must be submitted online by prospective athletes for Division 1 and 2 • Requires minimum academic GPA in 14 approved courses • Includes SAT or ACT score which depends on academic GPA

  15. College and Scholarship Application Process

Application Process • Online applications • Printed applications • Completed applications should include • Counselor recommendation forms (from the application) • Teacher recommendations • Proper signatures • Check or money order or fee waiver payable to the institution (unless paid by credit card with the online application) • Student resume (optional)

Transcript/Records • Seniors get 3 free transcripts • There is a $2 processing fee for each additional transcript • Complete a transcript request form available in Guidance • ACT/SAT test scores will NOT be sent by Hillcrest High School with transcripts • Many colleges/universities and NCAA Clearinghouse require official scores be sent to the institution by the testing service • Complete at the time of registration for the ACT/SAT (up to 4 scores sent for no additional cost) • May request additional scores be sent via the testing service website. There is a charge for this. • Test scores WILL be sent with scholarship applications.

  18. Recommendation Letters • Students are encouraged to include two letters of recommendation with their applications. • At least one of the letters should be written by a teacher. The other letter can be written by a teacher, coach, employer or minister. • Allow the teacher 2 weeks to complete the letter. • Give the reference a copy of your senior resume for their use. • You may include a stamped, pre-addressed envelope for the recommender’s use.

Ways to Pay for College • Need-Based • Determined by FAFSA • Grants (Are not repaid) • Loans (Paid back after you graduate) • Work Study (earn money through a campus job) • Scholarships • Educational lottery scholarships • Community/National Scholarships • College Scholarships • Athletic Scholarships

  20. State Scholarships • You do not have to sign up or apply for these!! If you qualify for it, you receive it! • Palmetto Fellows Scholarship • LIFE Scholarship • HOPE Scholarship • SC Tuition Grants

  21. Palmetto Fellows • Requirements—1200 SAT or 27 ACT, 3.5 GPA, top 6% of class (end of sophomore or junior year) • Alternate—1400 SAT or 32 ACT, 4.0 GPA • Notified by email in Feb/June • Must enroll in a 4 year institution fall of next year for 8 consecutive terms • $6,700 for freshman year, $7,500 every year after

  22. LIFE • 2 year institution—3.0 GPA UGP • 4 terms of eligibility • 4 year institution—3.0 GPA UGP, 1100SAT/ 24 ACT & top 30% (must meet 2) • 8 terms of eligibility • Do not have to go directly to school • Can earn LIFE while in college • $5,000 a year

LIFE Enhancements • You can receive up to $2,500 extra annually if you are majoring in a math, science, or health related field, or if you are majoring in education to teach math or science • Must already be a LIFE or PF recipient to receive it • Must complete 14 credit hours in math/science each year • AP, IB, and dual enrollment will count towards that number at 4 year institutions • Palmetto Fellows--$10,000 • LIFE--$7,500

  24. HOPE • Requirements—3.0 GPA UGP • Initial college enrollment • 2 terms • $2,800

  25. SC Tuition Grants • Max is $2,800 • Need-based • Complete the FAFSA • 4 year limit • Check your college of choice to see if they accept SC Tuition Grants

  27. Acceptance Letters & Scholarship Awards • Students are asked to bring a copy of each acceptance letter and scholarship award which they receive.

  28. Individual Appointments Sign up sheets are located outside the door if you wish to schedule an appointment to discuss your child’s future plans.
