Basic Concepts of Universal Access and Good Practice Examples from Around the WorldPhillip Thompson
What is Universal Design ? “ The design of products, services and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for personal adaptation or special provision.”
Universal Access :Recognising Human Diversity “The diversity of our species reinforces the need for Universal Design and Universal Access.”
Universal Access : Recognising Human Diversity “The diversity of our species reinforces the need for Universal Design and Universal Access. Designers traditionally have been trained to design for the mythical average person. It is possible to design products and systems to suit a broader range of users; children, older adults, people with disabilities, people of differing size or shape, people who are ill or injured and people who are inconvenienced by circumstance.”

Challenges for Universal Design • Misunderstood concept • No education for professionals • Confusion with ill defined standards • Perceived aesthetic impact • Lack of integration within the regulatory framework
The status of Universal Access • Inadequate technical understanding • Weak regulatory framework • Limited or no monitoring • Perceived special provision • Perceived cost • Assumed underutilization

How do we use Universal Design to achieve Universally Accessible Environments ? • Ensure executive commitment • Develop a UA mandate agreed to by all parties • Formulate an inclusive UA delivery framework • Provide a UA training programme for everyone • OptimiseUA synergy in mainstream provision • Use good technical expertise and experience • Review and audit at regular intervals • Monitor implementation and operational systems
What is the relationship between standards, regulations and universal design? • Standards should : • Continue as the baseline in accessibility • Developed within an inclusive framework • Standards should be applied consistently • Universal design should: • Optimise and ensure maximum functionality • Establish synergy in mainstream provision • Be used as a vehicle for educating designers • Promote full inclusivity through UA • Expound the cost efficiencies of UA
What is the relationship with the sustainability movement? • Is it really a green issue? • Should we try to connect it? • Does it become diluted?
Universal Access is not complex and does not need complex technology!
