Song Qingling is a famous Chinese woman revolutionist. She was born in 1893. She married Dr Sun Zhongshan in 1915. She was the vice-president of the People’s Republic for many years. She busied herself with various welfare
activities (福利事业), ranging from heading the Women’s Federation to a number of committees involving children.
Madame Curie is the greatest woman scientist. She played an important role in the development of modern physics. Her discovery of radium opened the treasure-house of atomic energy. In 1903 Madame Curie and her husband Pierre Curie shared the Nobel Prize for
physics. After her husband’s death Curie became the first woman professor in France. In 1911 she was awarded a second Nobel Prize. This is for her discovery of radium and polonium. Later she worked on the application of radioactivity to medicine.
Pearl S. Buck is a famous American woman writer. She was born in the USA but grew up in Zhejiang Province after her parents moved to China in 1895. She first learnt Chinese and was in America and then returned to China. In 1931
she wrote her best-known novel, The Good Earth. She won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938.
She was a world-famous Catholic nun. From the age of 18 she worked in India to help the poor. For more than 30 years she took care of people who were often mentally or physically disabled. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in
1979. In 2003, she was honoured with the name of Blessed Teresa.
