Ny-Ålesund, Kongsvegen Stick 3_3, Bergen Project; Gallet J.C. Conditions: fully clear sky, quite some wind, slight blown snow, would say around 6 to 8 m.s-1 wind speed. Stratigraphy on glacier on 30April 2013 GPS : N = 78˚48’29.6 E = 12˚52’46.0 Altitude = 339 meters a.s.l. Observations 3 sets of measurements with the FS, 3 looking up, 3 looking down, 3 looking up, clouds in front of sun, 13:45; 13:49 and 13:51 local time Surface layer : is constituted of blown snow, not hard at all. Density is 139 kg.m-3 and size is 0.1 to 0.2 mm Second layer: 48to 44cm: recognizable particles of dendritic crystals probably from the day before. Density was not measured but should be around 100 kg.m-3 and optical radius around 100 µm. Third layer:44to 36cm, rounded grain but much harder layer, 0.1 to 0.2 mm. Density is 350 kg.m-3. Fourth layer: 36to 25 cm. Facetted crystals, density of 272 kg.m-3 and size of 0.3 mm. Fifth layer: 205 cm down to the ice layer. Depth hoar crystals of 0,5 to 1 mm size and density of 402 kg.m-3, quite high but the layer is quite hard as well. 50 48 44 36 25 Tair@ + 150 cm : - 4.9°C T snow from top in degree C, see depth on stratigraphy for layers: 5 cm = -4.6°C10 cm = -5.5°C 15 cm = -6.3°C 20 cm = -7.2°C30 cm = -7.5°C Glacier, ice, around 65 cm depth
