Discovery • Paul Villard • 1900 • French physicist who worked in Paris at the same time as Marie Curie • Used lead to stop Alpha and Beta rays, the other ray that penetrated was called Gamma
Uses • Used to treat Cancer • Used in CT Scans • Used to change White Topaz to Blue Topaz • Used to screen ship containers entering U.S. ports
Danger • Gamma Rays kill cells in living organisms • Overexposure can cause nausea, hair loss, hemorrhaging and eventually death
Visibility • Humans and other organisms can’t see it because it is such a high frequency • This is because Gamma Rays are 10,000,000,000 more energetic than visible light waves
