  1. SIPTUNational Women’s Forum 2005 Closing the GAPP Gender and Pay and Pensions Anne Maher Chief Executive The Pensions Board

  2. The Facts about Pension Coverage • only 46.8% of women in the Irish workforce • only 15.8% of those working in the agricultural industries including farming • only 15% of seasonal & part-time workers • only 12.5% of those working in the catering & tourism industries …have private pensions

  3. Regional Pension Coverage • Pensions coverage gets lower as you go West. • Because of: • more part-time, seasonal and contract workers • more employment in hospitality, retail and farming sectors • For example • only 50.8% of adults in the South West (Cork and Kerry) have private pension coverage • compared to • 58% in the Mid-East (Kildare, Meath and Wicklow) • 55.7% in Dublin City and County • ( CSO Quarterly National Household Survey - 2004).

  4. The Difference between Men and Women • Earn less than men • Have a broken career pattern • Are more likely to work part-time. • Live longer than men When compounded, these factors make women more vulnerable to poverty, especially in their later years. That can make for a longer but poorer retirement.

  5. Migrant Workers Are most likely to: • be in lower paid positions of employment • to work on part-time, seasonal or temporary contracts Therefore fall into employment sectors where traditionally pension coverage levels are low.
