3. Purpose The purpose of our presentation is to give you valuable information that will benefit you when you apply to college. As former students from Nimitz M.S. and Gage M.S., as well as Bell H.S. and Huntington Park H.S., we understand how important it to receive this knowledge. You will soon be making the transition from middle school to high school. Your performance in high school will determine which colleges you will be accepted into.

4. Can I get into UCLA? • YES YOU CAN! • Many students think that just because they come from an underprivileged neighborhood, they cannot get into universities like UCLA. That is not true. UCLA is open to any and all deserving students, you just have to do your part and study hard. • Are my grades good enough? • They will be if you take the right classes and put in the hard work. • Can I afford to pay for tuition? • Even if your parents don’t have much money, good grades can earn you scholarships and grants.

High School Preparation • A-G Requirements • General requirements in order to graduate from high school • 11 out of 15 must be completed by the end 11th grade • PSAT/SAT/SAT II/ACT ASSESMENT/ACT WRITING • Take the PSAT early in high school or middle school to practice • (SAT) OR (ACT ASSESMENT AND ACT WRITING) required for UCLA applicants. SAT II is optional. • Honors/AP Classes/AP Tests • Ask to be placed in honors classes and AP classes • A score of 4 or higher on AP tests gives you college credit

6. A-G Requirements (a): History/Social Science-2 years required (b): English-4 years required (c): Mathematics-3 years required, 4 years recommended –including Algebra and Geometry. (d): Laboratory Science-2 years required, 3 years recommended -including Biology, Chemistry, or Physics (e): Language other than English-2 Years required

(f): Visual and Performing Arts (VPA)-1 year required – dance | drama/theater | music | visual arts (g): College Preparatory Electives-1 year required – 1 class in any of the other subjects (a-f) For additional information go to http://www.admissions.ucla.edu

8. SAT/SATII/ACT There are many organizations who offer tutoring for these tests. Ask your college counselor about them. Libraries also have preparation books for these tests. So, you can check these out for free, if you do not want to buy one. Make sure to study for these tests! These play an important factor in your admission to many colleges.

High School Preparation cont… • Talk to your counselor • Go to the college center and ask about colleges and requirements • Do not be afraid to ask for help about what classes to take and what tests to prepare for • Extracurricular Activities and Community Service • Participate in sports or school programs (like Leadership) • Volunteer your time to help others – it looks great on your college application!

Financial Aid: Paying for UCLA • Types of Financial Aid • Grants • money given to universities by foundations, corporations, governments, small business and individuals • fund a specific project and require some level of reporting • Scholarships • an award for an individual student, for the purpose of furthering their education. • Scholarships are awarded based on a range of criteria which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. • Work-study • Qualifying students get priority for on-campus jobs to help them pay for school • On-campus jobs work with your class schedule and are close by

More Types of Financial Aid • Student Employment • UCLA and most college campuses have a human resources office specifically for students. • They offer jobs all over their campus where employers are flexible with students’ hours. • Loans • Student loans have low interest rates and can be deterred until graduation • They are given by private organizations through the university • FAFSA • http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ • Deadline: For initial awards - March 2 (every year) • Some programs (i.e. research programs) • Research programs pay for a fraction of your tuition in exchange for your time spent doing research on-campus

14. The Delson Scholarship: A Brief History • “The idea came out of my (Brad Delson) experience at Nimitz Middle School. When my friend invited me to speak to her class, I chose to focus not only on my music career but on my experience in college and how that helped me to be successful. I think it’s important to get kids at a young age to start thinking about college, because that will inform their experience inhigh school and give them something to work toward.”

15. The Delson Scholarship: A Brief History cont… In 2004, Brad Delson, the guitarist from Linkin Park, and his wife Elisa established the DelsonScholarship Fund at UCLA, which annually awards four-year scholarships to extraordinary students from Huntington Park and Bell.

16. The Delson Scholarship • How much? • $32,000.00 total; $8,000.00 per year • Requirements? • Bell or Huntington Park High School graduate with a minimum 3.0 H.S.
