  3. 3 4 Numerator Denominator What is a fraction? • A fraction is a part or a portion of a whole. • The number written on the bottom, or the denominator, tells how many parts the whole is divided into. • The number on the top part, the numerator, tells you how many of the whole you have.

  4. Fraction Collections • A fraction can also be a part of a collection. • The number on the bottom is the denominator and that shows how many in the group. • The top number is the numerator.   10. Equivalent Fractions Equivalent fractions show the same amounts. 4/8 2/4 = As you can see the shaded portions of these fractions cover the same amount of space inside the rectangle, even though they have different numerators and denominators. They both show the same amount.
