Auguste Clown • a rodeo or circus clown • Make-up and costume: • reddish brown makeup instead of white • Makeup and costume are exaggerated (huge mouth painted white, accented white eyes, huge bow tie, large shirt and pants, and large shoes) • Character • Makeup and costume look mismatched • Character reflects exaggerated appearance (Slapstick Humor)

Whiteface Clown • an all white face and features of black and red added for detail. • Two Types of Whiteface Clown: • Neat whiteface- if the makeup is proportion and looks normal in size • Grotesque whiteface- the makeup has exaggerated features • Character: • The white face clown is the leader and most commonly seen of the three types • A polished performer, usually drives the action of the plot forward

  4. Character Clown • uses makeup and clothes to represent a specific person or image • Examples • Hobo Clown- makeup looks messy, dirty, and unkempt. Wears sloppy, baggy clothes that look like it was found at a dump. • Rube Clown- Wears a red nose and plaid shirt and overalls. • Keystone Cop (Policeman)- Wears costume similar to a cop. • Character: • Usually plays the role of the misfit or odd man out.

  8. Now design your own clown character’s Make-Up! Draw it out in pencil 1st - No “re-dos” Be Neat and Creative! This is a grade! Make sure your design has FOUR colors and you name your clown character!
