What is the Young Leaders Scheme? • A specialist Explorer Scout Unit, Part of the District • Ongoing programme of training • To provide support to enable Young Leaders to work effectively in Section of their choice • To develop leadership skills • Preparing the leaders of tomorrow?!
Who’s it for? • ANY young person (14 – 18 years of age) • Not just Explorer Scouts • Working in: • Beaver Colony • Cub Scout Pack • Scout Troop • Recommended not their own within 6 months • Encourage to attend normal ESU • Provision of Balanced Programme
What is involved? • 11 instructional modules • 1 compulsory module • Within 3 months of joining Young Leaders’ Unit • 1 to 2 hours each (except K – First Aid) • Flexible delivery • 4 Missions (projects)

Mission 1 3 indoor meetings Report back to YLs Mission 2 3 outdoor activities Create a badgework recording system Report back Mission 3 3 Sectional Forum meetings Take action following these meetings Report back Mission 4 Responsibility for organisation / running of Section Planning meeting Report back 4 Projects
Routes into Young Leaders • Both an Explorer and a Young Leader • Invested member of District Explorer Scouts • Possibly doing D of E or Scout Awards • Young Leader only • Invested member of District Explorer Scouts • Possibly doing D of E • D of E outside Scouting • E.g. through school or college • Does not need to be invested whilst doing Young Leaders towards D of E Volunteering • If staying on after completing D of E – MUST be invested member of District Explorer Scouts
D of E Requirements • Volunteer on regular weekly basis as a Young Leader within a younger section (Beavers, Cubs or Scouts) • Must complete Module A (Prepare for Take off!) • Must complete other Modules • Bronze 2 Modules + A • Silver 3 Modules + A • Gold 5 Modules + A • Assessed and signed off by DESC

The role of Section Leaders • Inform ESL (YL) / DESC of any new Young Leader • Responsible for Young Leader’s safety & welfare • Not included as an adult in ratios • Integrate Young Leader into Section and management • Give the Young Leader: • Responsibility • Support • Encourage the Young Leader to participate in training Modules and complete their Missions
